Conducted by Spoor at the METCentre, 10 km off Karmøy, the study tracked over 21,000 bird passages since January 2022, providing key insights into bird behavior near turbines. Even after enhanced detection in October 2023, no collisions were found, proving that floating wind technology can coexist with bird populations. This data supports sustainable development and sets a positive example for future offshore wind projects. Interesting discussion to start the day with at Nordenergi with contributions by Ørsted, WindEurope, Renewables Norway and DG ENER on non-price criteria for offshore wind: e.g. criteria for protecting and supporting biodiversity in when building wind farms. It will be particularly interesting to see how floating offshore will develop in the coming year. While the last 5 years where about setting 2030 and net-zero targets, it will be words like permitting, grid infrastructure and auction designs that will dominate in the next Parliamentary period. This includes blended finance and structured financing solutions like Energy as a Service. Metrus is committed to working with businesses, our ESCO partners, and governments to accelerate investment in sustainable energy. Our focus at COP is to advance commitments made by the countries to double energy efficiency growth by 2030 and to scale the deployment of sustainable cooling projects. The doubling of efficiency and the Global Cooling Pledge are critical, and these commitments should be tied to project implementation. “Norway and the UK share a long history of energy cooperation, and the North Sea is a key shared market for both countries. We need to increase standardisation of licensing processes, support schemes, and regulations, as well as ensure skills and knowledge are shared between both countries." This was the message from RES’ Managing Director in Norway, Eli Wærum Rognerud, who was invited by Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål and Kerry McCarthy, Minister for Climate at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and along with other industry leaders to share their perspectives on #renewablenergy at #ONS in Stavanger last week. As Norway’s electricity demand is set to rise, we are committed to investing in the region to help achieve our vision of a future where everyone has access to #zerocarbon energy.

Today, Swedes are celebrating ‘midsommar’; arrival of the summer season, and that the best time of the year awaits them. It will be interesting to see if this will be equally true for Swedish offshore wind which in recent years has seen renewed interest and increasing competiton for attractive offshore wind sites. So far more than 20 developers have filed permit applications for numerous gigawatt-scale projects totaling +120 GW (some overlapping). Nevertheless, Sweden has been widely criticized for its complex and slow permitting processes so it remains to be seen if the pace of permitting can keep up with the pace of developer ambitions - hopefully the best is yet to come for Swedish offshore wind.
