(AUSTRALIA 04.12.24) #tomatoes Tomato glut crisis: As prices plummet, who is standing by Australian farmers? [AG: Breaking Down the Tomato Industry’s Web of Half-Truths and Price Gouging] Australian farmers are facing a crisis due to an oversupply of truss tomatoes, with prices plummeting to as low as $4-$5 per 5kg tray, well below the break-even point. Retailers, however, are charging up to $6 per kilo, leading to concerns over price fairness. ----- [AG: Once again, transparency and honesty in the Australian tomato industry are nowhere to be found. We were bombarded with warnings about tomato shortages and sky-high prices due to the ToBRFV virus in South Australia, yet here we are with a glut of tomatoes on the market. The much-discussed "break-even price" of $8 per tray remains unsubstantiated, as no one is willing to investigate or report the true costs of production and post-farm gate logistics. Even Box Divvy’s claims about fair pricing fall flat without solid proof. Is paying an extra $0.40 per kilo above a vague $2.00 break-even price enough to support that tomato grower? It’s time for some real accountability and honest reporting in our industry.] ----- https://lnkd.in/gSJeFMZU

The United States’ fruit and vegetable production, as well as the number of farms in the country, has been declining for decades while it increasingly relies on other countries to fill in the gap, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. “We have nearly a billion acres of farmland, we have a population of just 330 million people, yet we’re not feeding ourselves, and we’re increasingly reliant on imports for our key foods,” said President and Co-Founder of Farm Action Angela Huffman. Fruit production is down nearly 36% in 2024 from 2003, while vegetable production is down 6.3%, according to the USDA. Imports make up a growing share of fresh produce availability, with 60% of the total fruits and 38% of vegetables in the U.S. supplied by other countries in 2021, with Mexico as the largest supplier. https://lnkd.in/gWGrGVhx #unitedstates #fruit #vegetableproduction #farms #declining #impact #foodproduction #increasing #reliance #foodimports #foodsecurity

Idaho Potato Commission Secures Millions for Surplus Potato Purchase The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) expressed gratitude towards Secretary Tom Vilsack and his team at USDA-AMS for their swift response to the industry’s request. The IPC also acknowledged the concerted efforts of key stakeholders, including Mark Klompien of United Potato Growers of America, Kam Quarles and Dean Gibson of the National Potato Council, the Russell Group, and the IPC staff, in successfully submitting the funding request to the USDA. Surplus Management and Market Stabilization The USDA-AMS’s commitment to releasing public solicitations, including product purchase specifications, in the coming days, underscores the urgency and importance of this initiative. By purchasing surplus potatoes, the USDA aims to stabilize the market, support farmers, and ensure the continuous supply of high-quality Idaho potatoes. According to the IPC, the surplus purchase will cover both fresh and dehydrated potatoes, addressing the current overproduction and preventing potential waste. This initiative is particularly crucial as Idaho, the nation’s leading potato producer, ships a substantial volume of potatoes each season. Economi... https://lnkd.in/ehM5qxmF
