100% Agree. The reality is that while growers are realising negative net returns, even negative gross returns at current prices, there is no way that they can farm for the long-term better strategy, but need to survive in the short-term, and therefore nuts will keep flowing to the nut-in-shell markets that realises higher back-on-farm returns. We need a kernel market that can provide better back-on-farm returns after processing cost, which would cause processing efficiency, reducing costs and therefore reducing our reliance on a the NIS market. Most growers are at least 3 years away from reaching maturity after which pressure will only then start easing.
Alex Whyte, director of Green Farms Nut Company in White River, said it was important to maintain the premium status of macadamias. “There are big opportunities in the ingredient space, but it takes a long time to develop. Our industry operates on short cycles, but we need to think long term to bring stability to prices at higher levels. Right now, the industry is in danger of chasing short-term gain in sending the bulk of nuts to China and getting quicker payments, but it will result in long-term pain if we neglect the kernel market.” https://lnkd.in/dtHT4JcZ

🍒 Optimism for South Africa's Cherry Season 🍒 Despite early frost challenges affecting some cherry varieties, Tru-Cape growers remain positive about this season's harvest. Deon Malherbe from Eselfontein farm notes that while there are fewer cherries, their quality and sugar levels are outstanding, with the season running two weeks later than last year. Nico Verhoef, financial director at Witzenberg Properties, shares that early variety losses have driven prices up by about 25% compared to last year. As consumer demand increases both locally and internationally, the outlook for South African cherries looks bright, with significant growth in cherry orchards in the Ceres region. https://lnkd.in/ePw5CM4t
