When Maggie Smith was first hired as a Team Lead over shipping, little did she know the opportunities that awaited her down the line. Maggie was a pro at making sure every package went out the door properly packaged and protected. She crossed-trained in all areas so she could lend a hand wherever needed. About two years into her tenure, an exciting new role opened up as Warehouse Supervisor and she jumped at the chance to take on more responsibility. In her current position, Maggie oversees all warehouse operations to ensure everything runs like a well-oiled machine. "I love the work flow and the teamwork," she said. "Our ability to work with each another is based off how we all treat one another, and that begins with LOVE, SERVE, CARE and RESPECT." What makes Maggie so invaluable is her willingness to wear multiple hats and do whatever it takes to get the job done right. She's a shining example of a leader. "I enjoy teaching people new things, seeing their expression when they learn it and understand it. Everyone has their own way of learning, it's important to me to keep teaching until they've learned it." I have been consulting with a 50 year old company in the Philadelphia area from the onset of them becoming an ESOP some 7-8 years ago. As is indicative with most ESOPs, the mere fact that ownership is passing to the employees reflects an Evergreen (see the Tugboat Institute) culture that isn't seen enough in today's world. The company has grown significantly since becoming an ESOP, and although always successful and profitable, the current Leadership Team has recognized there is much more they can be doing. So they have revisited their Vision and Mission. Through that process, they realize they have always known their Mission, but needed to do work on their Vision and the Communication of that Vision to the rapidly growing employee owner group. The communication piece is not an easy task with upwards of 500 people working in their 2 plants at given times throughout the year. Building an operating system based on Ownership as opposed to Accountability, is the most impactful lesson I have learned in my 30 years of Executive Coaching and Teaming Consulting. There is still a lot of work to be done at this company, but just recognizing the need to better communicate the focus of where they're going (their Vision), what they are really doing (their Mission) and how they are going to do it (their Core Values) to the ever growing number of Employee-Owners is certain to get them on the track they are hoping to achieve. Whether you are an ESOP or not, If you are a company that recognizes it's essence is it's people, and you are sincerely interested in making your company the best they can be, I would love to sit down with you and share what I have learned.

It is so important that bosses show their employees recognition and appreciation. Because if you don't do that, sooner or later another employer will do it! A thank you or a kind word for a completed task is so easy and immediately leaves employees with a good feeling! In addition, an employee who feels valued will always do more than is expected of them. So win-win. I think: Healthy gratitude shown to employees is a given for a good manager and shows leadership strength and competence!
