“HR is still a misunderstood function in terms of the value and power it can bring to a firm’s CEO and leadership,” - Paige Ross, global head of human resources at Blackstone. Paige's comments really resonate with me especially this .." It’s incumbent upon HR leaders to have the courage to show what we can do, the ability to learn what we don't know and to always think like a businessperson. The best HR leaders are businesspeople first, with an expertise in HR.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eSDFg_a9

It is so important that bosses show their employees recognition and appreciation. Because if you don't do that, sooner or later another employer will do it! A thank you or a kind word for a completed task is so easy and immediately leaves employees with a good feeling! In addition, an employee who feels valued will always do more than is expected of them. So win-win. I think: Healthy gratitude shown to employees is a given for a good manager and shows leadership strength and competence! Of course, recognition is a two-way street and can also be shown among colleagues or to managers. What form of appreciation is particularly important to you? 👇🏽 HJ Real Estates

Highly recommend a newsletter that my Spencer Stuart colleagues @Claudius Hildebrand and @Bob Stark have just launched taking off from their excellent new book, The CEO Life Cycle. The book tells how being appointed CEO is just one step in a journey of evolving stages that require ongoing personal reinvention. It's based on a unique study of the individual performance of every twenty-first-century CEO of the S&P 500, and identifies five stages -- launch, calibration, reinvention, complacency trap, and legacy -- that present distinctive headwinds and tailwinds and require leaders to develop fresh skills and strategies in order to thrive.

I’ve learnt (and continue to learn) so much from Stuart. He’s one of the main reasons I joined the M&S transformation. There are many insights in this article that business leaders should follow, for example: “I don’t believe in criticising the competition, I believe in learning from them, looking what everyone is doing and looking for the good.” It’s so right. How else can you raise the bar and learn if your start point is to look down at others? Marks and Spencer | Stuart Machin | Moira Benigson
Privileged to share my latest column 'in conversation' with Stuart Machin, CEO at Marks and Spencer - an inspiring, industry-defining leader. I sat down with Stuart in our offices in Primrose Hill to discuss the path that led him to CEO, the biggest learnings from his career, and why positive dissatisfaction lies at the very heart of his leadership style.
