Today, I listened to Vusi Thembekwayo 's podcast on 'Ideas That Matter: Genesis' and learned about the fascinating story of sliced bread. I never knew where the phrase 'the best thing since sliced bread' came from, but now I do! Otto Frederick Rohwedder, a jeweler who lost his business during World War I, went on to work in the baking industry and saw an opportunity to improve bread production. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a factory fire in 1917 that destroyed his blueprints and equipment, Rohwedder persevered. He also faced criticism from other bakers who believed sliced bread would go bad quickly and fall apart. However, Rohwedder's determination paid off, and on July 7, 1928, he successfully sliced the first loaf of bread using his machine. This innovation made bread more convenient, accessible, and affordable for the masses, earning it the phrase 'the best thing since sliced bread.' Vusi Thembekwayo shared valuable insights from Rohwedder's story: - When innovating, expect criticism from experts in the field, as they are often invested in the old way of doing things. - Sometimes, the starting point of something is not its destined endpoint. - We should not idolize our heroes but rather learn from their achievements and strive to do better and push beyond their boundaries. Vusi's conclusion was thought-provoking. He says that his core belief is to disappoint or be disappointed by our heroes. We must look at what our heroes have done and assume we can do better or push past the boundaries they never thought possible. #motivation #innovation #entrepreneurship #inspiration
