⚖️ Last month, Terre des hommes, together with key partners, organised the Latin America Regional Pre-Congress on Justice for Children, held on November 12-13 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Focusing on "Accelerating progress in child justice systems: Contemporary approaches to restorative responses and strategies for justice and peace in contexts of violence, conflict, and insecurity," the event brought together regional and national professionals committed to advancing child-centered justice. Through dynamic discussions, expert panels, and collaborative workshops, participants explored restorative justice frameworks, peace and justice strategies, and child-centered solutions to violence and insecurity. The event culminated in the reading and signing of the 2024 Cartagena Declaration – Towards Child-Centered Justice in Latin America. 🪨 This Regional Pre-Congress is a pivotal milestone leading up to the 5th World Congress on Justice with Children, set to take place in June 2025 in Madrid, Spain. Together, we are ensuring that the voices of children and adolescents are heard, advocating for a future where their rights are fully recognised and protected. 🗞️ Our new seminal report on child rights and customary justice is out! This report is based on an in-depth study of 3,894 children’s cases dealt with by customary justice systems in Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories (West Bank, and the Gaza Strip), Afghanistan, Egypt, and Burkina Faso. The report explores the complex ways in which customary or informal justice systems impact the children who participate in them, either as victims or perpetrators. Contemporary approaches to child-centered justice point to the need to engage with customary justice systems. The ability to access justice for all, including children, is a crucial component of securing peaceful, just, and inclusive societies There is now an unprecedented ’momentum’ to reinforce customary justice systems within the Child Rights’ and Sustainable Development Goal 16’ agendas’ This seminal report has been made possible through the partnership between Terre des hommes and the Disrupting Violence Beacon at Griffith University. SAVE THE DATE! Livestream / New York, November 19, 7:15 PM CET: STOMPING FOR PEACE – CHILDREN DEMAND AN END TO THE NORMALIZATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN AT A SPECIAL SESSION AT THE United Nations IN NEW YORK Attend the session online via SOS Children's Villages International LinkedIn page or register here if you would like to follow the session with French or Spanish interpretations: https://lnkd.in/eD74n6G2 Today, it is estimated that 400 million children—about 1 in 5—live in conflict zones or are on the run from such regions. Many are injured, killed, abducted, or sexually abused. With this initiative from SOS Villages d’Enfants Belgique / SOS Kinderdorpen Belgium, children from over 30 countries are bringing a powerful message to the United Nations: “Stop the violence. We want peace.” The 35th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child calls the international community to reflect. Despite the clear obligations set forth in this treaty, leaders continue to ignore international law, leaving millions of children to grow up in unsafe and violent conditions. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which demands prioritization of children's rights, is repeatedly violated. Children’s rights are non-negotiable. Stomping for Peace is more than a call—it is a demand by children to be included in decisions that shape their lives. They are not merely observers; they are advocates for a peaceful future. SOS Kinderdorpen calls for renewed commitment and accountability to ensure safe environments and caring relationships for every child. No child should grow up alone. #stompingforpeace #UN #unitednations #stampenvoorvrede #childrensrights

Did you know that over 7 million children worldwide are deprived of their liberty each year—in justice systems, migration facilities, armed conflicts, and other contexts? This stark reality demands urgent action. The #GCHumanRights continues its efforts to implement the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, a landmark initiative documenting this plight and proposing solutions to address it. Over the past five years, we have organised more than 50 workshops and international, regional, and national events, alongside over 25 projects in collaboration with our partners. 🌟 As part of this work, our Secretary General, Manfred Nowak, will join the high-level panel at the Global Conference on Justice for Children Deprived of Liberty, taking place from 17–19 December in Geneva. This critical event will assess progress and chart the course for the next phase of implementation, creating an action-oriented roadmap for change. Manu Krishan, our Global Study Programme Coordinator and Head of the Global study Unit, who has been member of the steering group of the conference, will also take part. At the conference, we will also showcase the documentary film Enfants enfermés / A Slide and Barbed Wires by GC alumna Noémie NINNIN. Co-funded by the Global Campus, the film has been featured on France.Tv in partnership with UNICEF France. We are actively working to turn the Study's recommendations into tangible change. Our focus areas include: - Developing and supporting non-custodial solutions - Strengthening data collection and monitoring systems - Creating multi-stakeholder approaches to reduce child detention - Implementing prevention and reintegration programs Together with partners like Defence for Children International - International Secretariat, UNICEF, and the UN Global Study NGO Panel, we are committed to upholding every child's right to freedom and dignity. ➡ According to a new report, the failure to take responsibility for realising the rights of Romani children across Europe means that millions still live in fear, poverty and hunger “just because their home State and non-Roma neighbours refuse to recognize them as equal citizens and innocent children entitled to our support, protection and respect.” ❗ The report finds that right across Europe, discrimination against Roma is “an inherent feature of governance institutions, administrative structures, service delivery mechanisms and professional practice”. Antigypsyism needs to be countered actively, constantly and consistently, and the author calls for a critical realignment of the current child protection model to address “the massive ongoing violations of Roma children’s rights in Europe.” Find out more in the article by Bernard Rorke: https://lnkd.in/dwtN6A4A #RomaRighst #ChildrensRights #Report #ERRCreports

As we mark International Child Protection Week, we've been reflecting on the importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are not just words on paper—they are a commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of every child. As sector workers, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child informs our practice and support of First Nations families, refugees, and other humanitarian entrants. And these rights should remain front and centre when we discuss issues such as the age of criminal responsibility. By embedding the principles of the UNCRC into our work, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive system in which every child in every community gets a fair go.
