As a Hebrew Studies graduate from Poland, as well as a Hebrew University of Jerusalem M.A. graduate, I was and am often asked about sides in the Middle Eastern (lack of) peace process. I was also often seen as a strict supporter of one of the sides by people who didn't really know what I think and who still saw me as their enemy. This happened also during the U.S. Department of State's and IREX's CEE Program, in which I participated this year. I must admit - it wasn't easy to go on my own to the U.S. for a program about civic engagement and inclusiveness and find myself in a position where I needed to immediately prove, that strangers that just met me and have a strong, negative opinion about me, may have actually based that viewpoint on a wrong notion (and quick conclusions drawn from my LinkedIn profile). The program was three months long, and so it was a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into dialogue about all the Middle Eastern topics (and other ones obviously too). Every now and then I would have a more or less heated discussion about wars, about nationalist movements, refugees, and most importantly ways towards peace and justice. The conclusion that we drew from most of those discussions (which is also something instilled in me since I first started working with Fundacja Nowej Wspólnoty | New Community Foundation), was that having different backgrounds, we won't always agree on everything and that's fine - as long as we respect and listen to each other, instead of guessing the other person's opinion and labelling everyone without getting to know them. That's what Seeds of Peace is doing, giving me some new hope and energy for more dialoguing again.
