Yesterday, I attending the 10th Annual Cancer Conference, where we heard from inspiring and insightful speakers. Cancer remains one of the most challenging diseases we face, and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we are committed to improving how we manage it. Later this year, the arrival of the much-anticipated linear accelerator, along with new staff, will be a game-changer. The advanced technology of the linear accelerator allows for more precise targeting of cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This means more effective treatments, fewer side effects, and ultimately, better outcomes for our patients. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month & we are mobilizing the healthcare community to prioritize lung screenings for North Carolinians. Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI), in cooperation with a statewide consortium of leaders and healthcare organizations, today announced the launch of Screening Saves, a comprehensive program to raise awareness and increase access to lung screenings across North Carolina. LCI has created a Screening Navigator Network of over 50 lung screening centers and will launch a Screening Saves pilot program in 2025 in partnership with ECU Health. Today on World Lung Cancer Day, we acknowledge the fight against lung cancer and its impact on countless lives. Despite significant strides in research 🔬 and care 👩⚕️, in Wisconsin, there are alarming disparities in lung cancer mortality rates–especially among minorities. Through the Community and Cancer Science Network (CCSN)–a multi-year, nearly $10 million investment by AHW– Medical College of Wisconsin researchers and community partners 🤝 are working to address these disparities. Sharing my recent Grand Rounds: University of California, Davis Lung Cancer Integrated Service Line – What is It & Why it Can Help Us Save Lives. At UC Davis Health & UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center we’ve created what I like to call a solar system of connected, gravitational lung cancer care. This integrated approach brings together screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship into a seamless network, ensuring patients feel supported every step of the way. By connecting every “orbit” of care, we’ve: • Markedly increased our lung cancer screening rates, detecting cancer earlier when it’s most treatable. • Reduced fear by simplifying complex systems and providing clear, compassionate guidance. • Built trust with our patients, creating an environment where they feel cared for as individuals, not just cases. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer, but we can change that story. Integrated systems like ours demonstrate the power of teamwork, innovation, and a commitment to saving lives.
