Wow, this is really interesting -- something I've been thinking about too. My hypothesis: the internet has allowed everyone to create but has also allowed everyone to be a critic. Putting out something truly new and creative makes you vulnerable to public criticism at scale -- a terrifying thing for most people, myself included. Human instinct is to avoid being ostracized by the tribe at all costs for self-preservation purposes. We are programmed to perpetuate status-quo and it takes real risk tolerance to reject it. This was true when we were hunter-gatherers and is maybe more true in the age of social media.
The solution is copy/paste what's worked in the past, which results in the diluted and dull feeling Corey correctly identifies. Hard to break the cycle, especially when those who hold the purse strings are also fearful of public backlash.
TL;DR haters ruin everything.

We're stuck in a Nostalgia Loop.
Feel free to tell me if I'm off-base or is these kinds of posts are killing your feed, but I had to get some thoughts out after today's Supreme x Tyler, the Creator announcement. For the past few months, I've seen the same sentiment bubbling in so many different forms:
"Is everything bad right now?"
Music feels like it was made in a lab to get streams and be synced into commercials. Half of the beats on Rap Caviar are samples (term used generously) of rap hits from 20 years ago.
"Streetwear" has slowly distilled down into 90's Polo collections with the Chad filter on.
Disney just gave $80M dollars to a guy who we all saw die a permanent on-screen death.
It's the same reason I instinctively push back against teams using Throwbacks as their primary jersey.
We're mortgaging our cultural future for the safety and comfort of a rose-colored past.

How Going to the Movies Is Changing, in Charts
Hollywood’s new normal involves fewer wide releases, more big screens and novelty popcorn
The stakes for the industry are particularly high during the summer season, which typically makes up some 40% of domestic ticket sales in a given year.
There have been fewer wide releases—movies opening or eventually playing in 2,000 or more theaters—out this year. Just 54 wide-release films have been released so far in 2024, which is about 80% of the average number by this point in prepandemic years.
When customers do go to movies, they increasingly prefer “premium large format” and IMAX screens, both of which now account for a larger share of box-office sales than they did before the pandemic.

***Embracing Diverse Entertainment: A Perspective***
In today’s digital age, it’s fascinating to observe the varied reactions to different types of entertainment. Recently, I noticed a significant amount of criticism directed at certain shows like "call me bae" on social media platforms like Reddit. Personally, I find these shows to be light-hearted and enjoyable, much like “Emily in Paris” or “2 Broke Girls.”
It seems somewhat unfair that while traditionally male-oriented entertainment like WWE or action movies are often enjoyed without much scrutiny, content aimed at young women or girls is frequently analyzed under a microscope. These shows are not trying to be cinematic masterpieces like “Citizen Kane” or “The Godfather,” and they shouldn’t be judged as such.
We should celebrate the diversity in entertainment and respect everyone’s preferences. As Taylor Swift once mentioned, we shouldn’t shame people for what they enjoy. Let’s allow everyone to enjoy their chosen form of entertainment without unnecessary criticism.
Love this move! In an industry where creators frequently leave their foundational brands to go independent but are often unable to take their IP with them, there’s always been this looming question about Hot Ones: “What happens if Sean leaves?” I love this reverse Uno card moment where he and Chris took the entire IP they built together out the door.
At BuzzFeed, there were many instances where creators tried to take their IP with them, but it just wasn’t possible. For example, Ryan and Shane couldn’t take Unsolved, so they had to create Watcher. Similarly, Ladylike couldn’t take their IP with them, and now they’re all doing their own separate projects. The Try Guys are a rare exception—they were able to keep their IP and create new content, although all their old content remains on BuzzFeed, with a small revenue share in place.
It makes me wonder: will we start seeing more of this? Creators growing at places like Vox, Condé Nast, or The New York Times, and eventually buying their… freedom, but also taking their belongings with them!
Merry Christmas to the Hot Ones team—love to see it!
Feels like good hands for Hot Ones, a win for our industry and a win for Rhett & Link's Mythical Entertainment.
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts here
Opinion: If ufc is the ”black hat “ prize fighting brand - “MerMan Boxing” (mermaid too) would be the ultimate “white hat” brand .. picture mermaid-tail designs for boxing trunks that represent a more humane, no legs, no kicks, form of combat… Near term AI advances in material science will make boxing helmets and gloves safer too, and MerMan Boxing (the MMB) is all about that!! In fact, the goal for the mermaid trunk patterns is to be a Burberry-like clothing brand for SPF shirts / active wear / all things safe (even phone cases). The best part of the MMB is the talent structure. The fighters are athletes, fitness models, actors, who need capital to fuel their dream, and “next-gen stats” matches them up with their potential. Picture an aspiring Arnold Schwarzenegger-like actor and an aspiring Olympic wrestler being matched up, telling their story, and then earn the funding they need to pursue their dreams after their match!!
Please note: MerMaid Boxing is a huge element of the league.
So pumped about this sports invention that I have to tag Andy Jassy !!
Think big.. Invent and simplify.. ownership.. customer obsession.. “who’s got it better than us” giddy up!!
