🌟 Employee Spotlight - Executive Coordinator, Shari Matteson! Shari has been with Grand Canyon Conservancy since 2022. 😄 What has been your favorite experience while working for GCC? 😎 I love Celebration of Art and have come to appreciate art so much since coming to GCC and being part of this event. As inspiring as I find CoA, my absolute FAVORITE GCC experience was when the board approved funding of all four priority projects during the 2023 Q4 Board Meeting. I assisted with preparing the materials for the NPS presentations the night before the Board vote, but the content came to life when the NPS subject matter experts presented their projects for consideration. When the Board elected to fund all four culturally significant and safety-related projects, I felt so strongly convicted by our mission and the impact that we have on this world wonder! It was truly awe-inspiring! 😄 What part of your work is most fulfilling? 😎 I feel so lucky to hold this position and serve and collaborate with our company’s leaders. For those who don’t know, I work closely with the Philanthropy department, the board, our Chief of Staff, and the CEO. I’ve got a backstage pass to the decision-making magic that happens! I love supporting the folks doing the moving and shaking at GCC! 😄 Do you have a trail or viewpoint at Grand Canyon or any other outdoor space? 😎 I love Desert View. The Canyon, the shock of blue-green water cutting through the rock, the Painted Desert backdrop… It’s just spectacular. For the first time in a decade, I took the eastern exit home, and I was reminded of what I love about northern Arizona. The red rock feeds my soul. 😄 What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? 😎 When I’m not wrangling my incredible three-year-old daughter, I enjoy working in my greenhouse garden, sitting on the front porch, watching my escapee chickens peck around, and connecting with family and friends. 😄 If you were any dessert, what dessert would you be? 😎 I’d be pumpkin pie- Best served slightly warm, it’s comforting and sweet, with a bit of spice. It’s a challenging dessert to execute perfectly, with the perfectly flaky crust (especially if you’re gluten intolerant like I am), the smooth and uncracked filling, and the careful balance of spices, but with attention to detail, it is sublimely classic. 😄 Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? 😎 Strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet! I pride myself on being friendly, compassionate, and helpful.

In the heartland of the USA & beyond 🌽, small-town farmers have long relied on each other for support, to share resources and knowledge in order to avoid performance issues. As I’ve been traveling back to and through these areas to help care for aging family members in 2023/2024, I’m constantly thrown off my routine. By the random highway waves of passing trucks, strangers hellos, and friendly smiles at the local stores. For me, this is a testament to the power of community that still exists today in many places. Being in major cities for work (Nashville and Los Angeles last week) & then driving directly to spend weekends in a town with 1 stoplight, brings perspective. As it turns out, there’s no app for genuine, neighborly kindness no matter where we go! Just like planting season for the farmers, our communities & connections are the people we’re relying on at our workplaces or in our fields of work (pun intended) if we need support. 🌱 We all try to find partnerships with loyal peers from these networks to deliver on this same principle or energy exchange. By sharing insights and working together, we know from history that companies can navigate challenges or opportunities more effectively. Just as farmers know the value of a helping hand or sharing a tool when a neighbor needs it…..smart businesses thrive through genuine, authentic relationships too. Because sometimes, the best business strategy is just being good humans & helping one another when or how we can. Who knew, right? Mid-way through Q2 and I hope you’ve planted the right seeds and supported your community or neighbors in return. I’ve known a few farmers personally and all are friendly optimists. They have to be, or we wouldn’t have any left. 🚜

16 months. That’s the amount of time needed to complete a mid-size construction project, or perhaps bring any new product to market. Some associate degrees or professional certifications can also be completed in this amount of time. Growing certain types of crops, like fruit trees, from planting to harvest, takes about 16 months. Unfortunately, it’s also the average tenure for many fundraisers. I reflected more on this in The Breakthru Blog this week. Take a look and let me know what you think. #majorgifts #tenure #resilience #enjoyment #productivity #leadership #innovation #fundraising

There are so many reasons to shop at your local farmers market, but it really clicked for me when I understood farmers to be small business owners. For years, we've been encouraged to #ShopSmall to support the local economy so shouldn't we do the same for the food we buy? In 2023, $21,000 was awarded to Midwest farmers to strengthen the resiliency of their businesses through Green City Market's Farm Forward Fund. This of course has a ripple effect on the community: 445,392 Chicagoans had the opportunity to create relationships with and buy from these local farms. Almost 200 Chicago restaurants shopped at Green City Market last year, bringing the bounty of the Midwest to diners across the city. By choosing to shop at Chicago's Green City Market, you are investing in your community and the future of food. #KnowYourFarmer Check out GCM's full 2023 Impact Report here: https://lnkd.in/g93mwveE
