Sony delighted me and many other long-time PlayStation fans today by making a surprise swap of the PlayStation 5's startup sequence for the original PlayStation 1 video. Additionally, they made it so we can swap the PS5 theme for that of any of the previous PlayStations, menu sounds included. I have one question to ask though - why did it take 4 years for PS5 to get themes, when the PS4 had them from day 1? These themes aren't even going to be permanent, unfortunately, meaning after the 30th Anniversary celebration we will be back to only the default choice. Nintendo also never added themes beyond the choice for white or black backgrounds on the Switch. Only Microsoft kept robust themes available with the Xbox Series, which felt only natural since they kept it running the same OS as the Xbox One (even going so far as to update the One alongside the Series consoles). Why did Sony and Nintendo move away from user customization when it comes to menus, themes, and console sounds? Is there really little to gain? Nintendo offered many themes on the 3DS, albeit late into its life, and Sony fully embraced themes on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles.
