I tend to be a slow reader, but as I have always heard since very young “fast and well done, there are not many who can do it”. So, I hope that I am still on time to leave some thoughts on the communication “Building the future with nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU” from the European Commission 🌱 On a positive note, the communication is very comprehensive and accurate on identifying the challenges & opportunities. The need to improve tech transfer “from labs to fabs”, ease navigation of regulations, and stimulate public understanding and market uptake for #biotech products. To name a few. Nevertheless, time allowed me to build a constructive critical view on the communication. ➡ First, the communication is “a plan of a plan” - with the first milestones expected for mid or end of 2025 and policies optimistically for 2026-2027. Well, I have concerns on how these timings fit the current #global run. Other global players innovate as fast as Europe and tend to be more agile on implementing policies. As an example, the US Executive Order from September 2022 sets goals to be achieved by 2025. Therefore, I believe that there is the need to put in place short-term smaller and effective steps to lay “the foundations of the foundations” to the EU Biotech Act - being it leveraging current legislation or pushing action at Member State level to smooth its implementation. Time to be creative! ➡ Second, the communication falls short on acknowledging EU’s limitations - an essential step to turn them into strengths. No matter how good the future EU Biotech Act will be, Europe will not be able to compete with (1) the US investment and capital market, due to their economy size and track record: invention of Venture Capitals or united stock market; (2) China’s manufacturing capacity, as an industrial powerhouse, has all the resources to build or transition infrastructures. Therefore, it is essential for the EU to adopt a strategical positioning connected to #targets (!) and choose #critical supply-chains, sectors and markets to reinforce its economic security and position as key global player. We need a strategy! 🌍 “What does Europe want to be?” Let’s use the time in front of us to support the #EU on developing its short- and long-term roadmap for biotech, #biomanufacturing, and the bioeconomy.

Very excited to soon welcome our speakers and guests from Switzerland for the 1st Serbia-Switzerland Innovation Forum, taking place on 11. December in the prestigious Palace of Serbia in Belgrade. This is a project we have been working on for months, together with the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation, and with the support of the Belgrade Science and Technology Park, the Center for the Promotion of Science, the Swiss-Serbian Chamber of Commerce, and Novartis. The Forum aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. This Forum presents a unique opportunity to bring together leading experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs from Serbia and Switzerland to exchange knowledge, ideas, and experiences. The Forum will focus on pressing topics such as clean technologies and sustainability, intellectual property & technology transfer, boosting start-up development, investment landscape and institutional support, as well as health & innovation. The organization of this Forum is inspired by Switzerland's long-standing support for Serbia in developing its innovation ecosystem. Both Serbia and Switzerland have recognized the potential of innovation as a driver of the economy and are heavily investing in their innovation landscapes. During the Forum, the signing of an MoU between Bio4 Campus and Novartis will take place, which will further enhance cooperation and create new opportunities for joint projects and initiatives. Additionally, the Forum will showcase the latest innovations and projects from both countries, thereby strengthening the connections between scientific and business institutions. This event aims to lay the groundwork for long-term collaboration and joint efforts on innovations that will shape a sustainable future. Due to very high interest, the registration is already closed, but for more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/gcBqUKHP
