Calling all tech founders in the EU/UK...we need YOUR voice! 🗣 Our partners at EURO_GENDEX (a new initiative under the European Innovation Council’s Horizon Europe program) have launched a survey, and they need to hear from you! 🌟 Their mission is to improve and expand the diversity of talent across the entire European tech ecosystem to drive world-class performance and growth. GENDEX will help policymakers and investors to make better-informed decisions by providing data and insights into the journey of diverse founders, particularly women, from pre-seed to IPO. 💪 Their survey aims to collect relevant information on how diversity impacts the fundraising journey for start-ups and scale-up founders in the European innovation ecosystem. Applications are now open for the US Women in Tech Accelerator! This three-year initiative, a partnership between Village Capital and Standard Chartered US, will support 10-12 women-identifying-led tech startups each year, developing solutions to improve economic mobility and equitable access to essential services for women, families, and historically marginalized and overlooked communities across the United States. Together with Standard Chartered, we aim to create a more equitable business landscape where women-led tech startups can access the resources and capital they need to scale their solutions. 📅 Applications close on January 31, 2025. I was truly honored to join the TechFoundHer Festive Celebration: Building the Future event at MCS Group. The vibe of this event made me think about what community is. One definition says it’s “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯.” And that’s exactly what I felt with Máirín Murray and #TechFoundHer_community —an inspiring group that brings together strong personalities, role models, and, most importantly, honest stories. Stories of successes, failures, and, yes, even the fckups that shape the journey. I don’t see myself as particularly startup-y or entrepreneurial, and yet I deeply believe in fostering a culture of allyship for women in tech entrepreneurship. Especially when the statistics speak loud and clear: only 1 in 4 tech companies in Ireland has a woman on the founding team. We can, and should, do better. I also couldn’t resist stealing a few pearls of wisdom from the incredible female founders who shared their journeys: ✨ Imperfect is perfect ✨ Keep going! ✨ Educate yourself ✨ Network and support matter ✨ Feeling of being depressed happens—even for no reason, and that`s part of a journey ✨ Barriers you see might only exist in your head ✨ Focus on your moonshot and goal ✨ We’re going to do it anyway! Sounds a lot like a New Year’s resolution list, doesn’t it? I heard a pocket of good news for female founders in Europe at an event last night. Web Summit - taking over #Lisbon next week - anticipate that 45% of the start-ups attending this year will be female-led. If this is true (we don’t know, because it hasn’t happened yet) then this will be phenomenal! We all know the bad stuff, right? - Start-ups founded solely by women receive only 1.8% of total VC investment in Europe (all male team raise around 82%) - Though female-founded startups increased their number of deals (to around 5% in 2024), the overall value remains disproportionately low compared to male-founded startups. - Women in tech are underpaid, underrepresented and underfunded. (Sources in comments.) Web Summit’s commitment to creating a techspace where women are equally invited is a bright spot. They've consistently created an environment for female attendees (around 50% since 2021). And this year - through lots of proactive effort - it looks like almost half the start-ups attending will be female-founded. I’m excited! See you there?
