Investment casting, also known as #lostwaxcasting, has a rich history spanning over 5,000 years, dating back to ancient civilizations. In its earliest forms, craftsmen used beeswax to create patterns necessary for the casting process. The integration of #3DPrinting into #investmentcasting has brought about significant advancements. 3D printed patterns from Areion3D such as #SLAQuickcast or #3DPrintedWax offer up to a 90% cost reduction compared to conventional wax patterns, eliminating the need for tooling and streamlining the process. Foundries can now produce patterns in hours rather than weeks. Layer-by-layer 3D Printing allows foundries to create geometries that were previously impossible or challenging. Moreover, 3D Printed patterns result in high-fidelity and smooth surface finish, minimizing variabilities in casting quality. Whenever I build a structure with my son using LEGO bricks, I think of 3D printing a part made up of several melt pools. Each melt pool, like a LEGO brick, can sit next to or on top of another melt pool to form a structure. Perhaps that's why I always imagine that one day, additive manufacturing will be able to produce tailored products by controlling and customizing each melt pool according to the geometry, dimensions, and properties of the part. We can call it "melt pool engineering." A big, small, wide, shallow, or deep melt pool should be in the right location to provide the needed microstructure and properties. In our recent publication, in the Journal of Materials Research and Technology, we systematically investigated the LPBF of Ti-alloy through single-track and multi-layer studies to gain a deeper understanding of melt pool engineering in Ti-alloy. The main value proposition of #composites is #lightweight 🪶. The main value proposition of #3Dprinting is geometric freedom 🗽. Lightweighting has more value for larger structures. Larger structures have a higher size-to-load ratio, so trusses (or lattices) are the optimal design. Lattice structures are complex, this is where 3D printing comes in handy. So, composite 3D printing has the biggest value for manufacturing large scale truss-like structures. I will give you a few examples: Car chassis/frame 🏎️ Aircraft fuselage ✈️ Wing box 🪽 Turbine blade 💨 Seats 💺 Satellite frame 🛰️ ... and all types of frames. My favorite inspiration design of this type is an Airbus A2050 concept. The future of composite 3D printing is in large scale structures.

How is 3D printing heralding the future of sculpture? 🖨️ 3D printing, especially Binder Jetting technology, is revolutionizing the foundry industry by enabling the creation of intricate and precise patterns for metal casting. Foundries uses PMMA powder and a binding agent to translate digital CAD files into intricate 3D printed designs layer by layer. These patterns are then used in traditional investment casting, allowing for precision and efficiency. This blend of modern technology with traditional methods is opening new horizons for artists and manufacturers alike, making monumental sculptures like "The Embrace" possible. #3DPC2024 #Finalist "Rock Solid - limitless washed concrete 3D printing" HfG Karlsruhe Lukas Dechau GERMANY The Rock Solid stool is part of a collection of innovative objects made of "exposed aggregate concrete", which were 3D printed using a new additive method. The highly time-efficient manufacturing process requires neither support structures nor subsequent washing or reworking of the material. This allows completely new shapes to be explored within the material, such as curved hollow bodies, such as pipes, or complex free forms. The project originated as a prediploma at the HfG Karlsruhe, where more than 20 usable objects were created in April 2023, exploring various substrates and binders. The process development took place entirely within the university, using the university´s own CNC milling machine, to which the process could be easily adapted.
