Newsweek’s cover from two weeks ago captures the state of technology and healthcare today. And this quote from Paulo Nigro, CEO of Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Sao Paulo, Brazil sums it up well – “The hospital of the future Is a hospital driven by data … the [Covid] crisis has accelerated this process of using data to make decisions." Having just come from HIMSS 2024 (the largest health tech conference in the world with over 30,000 attendees and more than 1,000 companies on exhibit) I can confirm it’s all about AI and data. It's an exciting time to be in healthcare. There's a lot of hype out there for sure, but the stakes are high and healthcare consumers deserve every bit of innovation we can bring to the industry. And here’s one more quote from this issue of Newsweek and Gianrico Farrugia, MD, President and CEO, Mayo Clinic – "Risk number one is that health care doesn't embrace AI, and doesn't deliver what we need to deliver, which is better health care for all.”

The latest issue of the Journal of Healthcare Quality Research (JHQR) is here, featuring a diverse collection of articles that provide valuable insights into the latest advancements in #HealthcareQuality and patient care, with contributions from both national and international researchers. This issue includes an editorial by Antonio Garcia Romero that invites reflection on the impact of artificial intelligence tools, such as Chat-GPT, on the healthcare sector. The original articles cover a wide range of topics, including the practical utility of the AGREE instrument in developing clinical protocols, patient experiences in multidisciplinary integrated care units, the impact of work overload on healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the economic implications of non-compliance with national guidelines in acute bronchiolitis. We also present a review of tools for identifying adverse events in long-term care centers, along with quality improvement projects and scientific letters addressing innovative methodologies and current challenges in the healthcare field. Check out all the content here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dN7s6EBT And remember, if you are a member of SECA Sociedad Española de Calidad Asistencial, you can access the full articles from your private area on the website.

How do you balance clinical evidence when iterating new features in Digital Health? Methodologies used in Medical Devices (which tend to be static) can be insufficient when applied to Digital Health solutions (which are highly dynamic). I asked Dr Arrash Yassaee this question in a recent webinar. Key takeaways: Take a step back and look at what you are trying to achieve. Some iterations are trivial (ie changes in font) and don't need to be evaluated. Look at existing clinical evidence and see if that can be synthesized to support your own research. Consider releasing features in batches in sync with your evidence generation. This process can take time but with preparation and planning it doesn't have to be chaotic.

It was an honour to contribute to a thought-provoking European Parliament roundtable on digital health this week, organized by DIGITALEUROPE and facilitated by MEP Brando Benifei. I shared examples of how AI can transform healthcare over the next five years -and what Europe could do to bring these innovations to patients and healthcare systems: · AI Clinical Assistants will revolutionize how physicians work by automating data entry, streamlining access to patient information, and significantly reducing administrative burdens. These tools, will free up valuable time for patient care, improve adoption of healthcare technologies. · The Zero Childhood Cancer Initiative in Australia is a powerful example of how innovation can save lives. This program ensures every child diagnosed with cancer has access to cutting-edge precision medicine by integrating data from multiple EHR systems, genomics, and clinical tests. It not only delivers personalized treatment plans but also advances global research and reduces healthcare costs. Similar frameworks should be replicated in Europe. I look forward to further showcasing Oracle's contributions in this space alongside my colleague Elisa Caner to lead in AI-powered healthcare. Great sharing strong insights with Ray Pinto, Jaanika Merilo, Thomas Hellebrand, Olga Mironenko Stampfer, Sara Roda, Milana Trucl and all others. #AIinHealthcare #lifesciences #DigitalTransformation #EUHealth #Innovation #Collaboration #Interoperability

Day 2 at HLTH made it clear that the conviction driving almost everyone here is that AI can save healthcare. A lot will need to change before that happens, of course, and arguably the defining feature of the necessary change will be how many players need to be involved. "AI could change health on a planetary scale on the same level that penicillin changed health,” Dr. Karen DeSalvo, Google’s Chief Health Officer, told us in her Tuesday keynote, before hinting at this complexity: “But to address a health challenge in 2024, a single drug isn't going to cut it." This is partly evidenced by the delegate list here, which has some pharma, but more tech (many early-stage), as well as healthcare providers, and payors. Maybe that’s also why, despite the programme of C-suite panellists and pumping intro soundtracks, HLTH truly centres around conversations, over and above presentations. You can see that from the show floor: loads of informal nooks and networking areas; start-up showcases; people hanging around trying to work out who their 'speed date’ is. People everywhere, in fact, absorbed in discussions. They can't all have already known each other before they got here, surely?
