Looking to enhance your GIS-based land evaluation process for achieving watershed-based environmental goals? Not sure if the weights you’ve assigned to your environmental data layers capture their true nature and impact? Then, consider using fuzzy overlay instead of traditional overlay methods. In our new research article, "An Integrated Spatial Fuzzy-Based Site Suitability Assessment Framework for Agricultural BMP Placement," Nayyer Mirnasl, Simone Philpot, Keith Hipel, Peter Deadman, and I demonstrate how fuzzy logic offers a more nuanced approach, moving beyond Boolean (binary) classifications of landscape features. This approach treats environmental data as a spectrum rather than rigid classes separated by crisp boundaries. We applied this methodology to develop the first-ever site suitability map for implementing agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Thames River Watershed in southwestern Ontario. Our analysis integrates both hydrological factors and economic drivers of BMP adoption, offering an integrated approach to watershed management. I'm excited to share insights from my recent project on saline groundwater modeling, a critical study addressing one of today's pressing environmental challenges—saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifers. In light of rising global sea levels and increasing groundwater extraction, my recent project focused on modeling saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers, a critical challenge threatening freshwater resources worldwide. Using advanced tools like Processing MODFLOW and MT3DMS/SEAWAT, we simulated the complex interactions between freshwater and saline water to understand the biogeochemical dynamics in underground estuaries. Our model accounted for variable-density flow, the effects of advection and dispersion, and the long-term impact of saltwater intrusion on aquifer systems. The simulations revealed that seawater intrusion alters the ionic strength, oxidative capacity, and nutrient content of coastal groundwater, posing significant risks to drinking water supplies, agricultural productivity, and coastal ecosystems. We also explored remediation strategies, such as the use of injection wells to reverse saltwater intrusion, demonstrating that proactive management and simulation-based approaches are essential for protecting coastal aquifers in the face of climate change.
