In the Zernike Institute Advent Calendar, we are presenting 24 short spotlights in December. In these specials, we highlight PhD students, postdocs, support staff, and technicians of our research groups and team - providing a glimpse into their typical day at work. In Episode 8 meet Xiaojing Liu, PhD student in the Surfaces and Thin Films Group. Her research aims to uncover the hidden nature of two-dimensional (2D) materials by investigating the behavior of electrons. For this, she uses angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), a powerful technique that allows them to directly probe the electronic properties of solids and surfaces. 🔬 New Scientific Publication 📄 ❗ ➡️ We are delighted to announce the publication of our last article: "Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Quasi-Static and Dynamic Behavior of #Silicate_Materials", in the journal #Materials. 🌟 Summary: ✅ In this work, we investigate the mechanical behavior of silicate materials using a combined experimental and numerical approach. In addition to experimental observations, we propose analytical and numerical models to better understand and predict their responses under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. These models provide valuable tools for applications in various fields. 📚 About the publication: ✅ The true value of scientific research lies in its #impact and #relevance to the #scientific_community. Regardless of the journal reputation, a study importance is ultimately measured by how it #advances_knowledge and engages the community, as reflected in its #citations and #influence. We are confident that this work will contribute to ongoing discussions and inspire further research in the field. 🗞 Grant for two PhD Students at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER)! Electrochemical materials and interfaces are present in many energy systems, such as fuel cells, batteries, or water splitting devices. The performance of such devices is strongly related to the materials and interface properties. Therefore, understanding and tuning of these properties are crucial in order to reach highest performance and to supply alternative, sustainable energy solutions for the future. In this frame, DIFFER recently received a grant for two PhD students, one on experiments and one on modeling. The scientific aim of this grant is to identify the limitations at photo-electrochemical water splitting interfaces by intertwining operando spectroscopy with microkinetic modeling. #sharethenews DIFFER - Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research sawako nakamae Anja Bieberle-Hütter
