Being the leader when your boss makes you second-guess yourself I was leading the most extensive transformation project the organisation had ever experienced. My boss had delegated the project to me as a ‘growth opportunity.’ The reality is that he wanted to distance himself from it Because he thought it would be a disaster and fail However, when I signed off on a stage of work, he couldn’t resist double-checking my work, which led to delays. I was rattled at first and started to second-guess my decisions Then I caught myself and decided to tackle him on the matter I didn’t make a big deal out of it (he was still my boss with a fragile ego) But I gently explained about the impact on the project He stopped doing it. Here’s what I learned from the experience: - You are the leader, so don’t allow anyone to undermine your leadership. - Don’t be afraid to speak up and confront it - Prepare a solution before you have the conversation - Be decisive. Use I rather than we in your speech Outside interference can be well-intentioned and sometimes not Be ready to manage any situation. Boldness isn’t a flaw—it’s the strength that drives progress. It’s 2024, and yet we STILL hear these limiting ideas about how women “should” lead. Let’s set the record straight on the five biggest myths (with a healthy dose of eye roll 🙄 ): 𝟭. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 = 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 ➠ Confident women are “too full of themselves”? Please. Confidence is power, and owning our achievements inspires everyone around us. Serena Williams didn’t hold back, and neither should we! 𝟮. 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 = 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ➠ Let’s get one thing clear: Ambition isn’t selfish. Ambitious women raise the bar, lift up teams, and drive change. Leaders like Sheryl Sandberg didn’t dim their ambitions, and neither should we. Aim high—and bring others with you! 𝟯. 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 = 𝗔𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 ➠ “Too much” is what they call us when we’re assertive. The truth? Clear communication is the hallmark of strong leadership. Ursula Burns led Xerox to success with directness, proving that effective communication moves us forward. So speak up; it’s a strength, not a flaw. 𝟰.𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 = 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ➠ Expressing emotion makes us “unstable”? Try authentic. Leaders like Michelle Obama show that empathy and connection are the foundation of real leadership. Emotions build bonds—and build trust. 𝟱. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 = 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 ➠ If you’re leading with collaboration, they might say you lack authority. Jacinda Ardern has shown that collaboration isn’t soft—it’s transformative. How to survive and also grow on the career front when we are caught up in a TOXIC WORK ENVIRONMENT 1. Decide the long term and short term career plans assuming you are not in the toxic environment. 2. The effect of the toxic environment is on our mind. Try creative pause - stop thinking for 20 seconds. 3. Practice deep breathing. Control the Breath to control the Mind. 4. Learn to remain calm in a negative situation. 5.
