I have spent a lot of time since the election learning from organizers, DEIB experts, and people who are asking a lot of hard questions about what is to come. Consistently, folks are saying the same thing: this round, there are very few ways we can stop things happening on a federal, and maybe even state level. However! The hyper local level is where we can thrive. Where funding is less tied to state and federal money, where we have more freedom to make local decisions based on local needs, people are going to need us to be invested, involved, and engaged more than ever. Make it your goal to provide enough support locally to provide safety nets and barricades for things that will be much harder to control. When you sit down to make New Year’s resolutions, make sure you bring your budget and your schedule. While you work on yourself, how can you also use your gifts and talents to work on your local community? How can you fight back with individuals, families, and smaller, local politics to provide safety and support? Make it a priority, and be engaged in hope and action that will help folks ride out and fight back in the coming storm. For my Grand Rapidians, I challenge you to join Paul Kiger, LMSW, CAADC and I in supporting Affinity Mentoring. Students and families, especially those who are non-white and in our public schools, are going to be hit hard. Your donation of money or time today can be what makes or breaks them. What if the staff, the teachers, the schools, the students, and the families that work with @affinity.mentoring and organizations like it knew you were here to support them? What difference could it make? Don’t hesitate to support today. Make your end of year donations to Affinity and other hyper local organizations today. Take the time needed to lament, rest, feel all the feels… And then there’s work to do. Find local non profits you can partner with who are in proximity to to our neighbors impacted by systemic challenges and barriers and love them well (this means be culturally compassionate/humble too). All this to say, who wants to partner with me and The Firehouse Dream as we dream up even more ways to be a safe space and place for BIPOC youth in Chicagoland area? We are using creativity as a healing tool, as we invest in youth mental health and financial wellness (this includes focusing on racial healing.) We can’t do this work without our entire ecosystem, and most of all we need the funding to do this work! Come volunteer, donate, and/or leverage your network to get us even more connected. 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/gRDaSn7X
