World Agroforestry - ICRAF #WorldForestryDay 👇 "Food and agricultural (agrifood) systems feed the world and form the basis of our economic, political and cultural systems. At the same time, they are also drivers of environmental change at local and global levels. In this document, we put forward general steps for developing a holistic agrifood system assessment, as well as principles to guide decision making at each step of the design process, intended to support metrics-users in navigating the jungle of available approaches and selecting something that meets their needs. Agroforestry is the future of sustainable farming, and can include a range of other agroecological practices. However, its adoption in Europe faces several challenges. These include a lack of tools and data which can assess its economic, environmental, and social benefits, and monitor the impact of policies. To address these obstacles, #EURAF and 25 other consortium partners from 17 countries have joined forces in the DigitAF project that aims to: ✅ Support policy-makers in developing more effective policies to encourage agroforestry adoption and carbon farming. ✅ Provide farmers with tools to optimise the design and management of agroforestry systems at the field and farm levels. ✅ Enhance the capabilities of stakeholders to assess, quantify, and market the economic, environmental, and social performance and benefits of agroforestry. EURAF is assisted in these tasks by its extensive network of affiliates and members. 🌿✨ We were thrilled to participate in the AGROMIX Agroforestry Policy Summit in Brussels! 🌍🌳 On April 17, 2024 Agroecology Europe together with #AGROMIX, a sister project of MIXED, held a policy summit on agroforestry in Brussels. #H2020MIXED was represented by Tommy Daalgard (Aarhus University) and Holger Pabst (Institut für Ländliche Strukturforschung (IfLS)). 👀The IfLS used this opportunity to contribute results of its policy work in MIXED and to compare and harmonise the results with other agroforestry projects. The objective is and remains to remove existing barriers and close gaps. Still, there is considerable room for improvement in the political-regulatory framework conditions for agroforestry, from investments and area measures to training and economic efficiency. 👉Explore how MIXED project contributes to advancing agroforestry and sustainable farming practices. 📎 An Overview of Agroforestry Policies in the EU Gerry Lawson, EURAF's Policy Officer, presented an overview of agroforestry policies within the EU at an event organised by RefreSCAR and the EU CAP Network and held in Cork Oak and Cork Competence Center, Coruche, Portugal. General conclusions and specific examples from nine Member States were shared. Despite having been included in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) since 2007, agroforestry support remains limited 🛑. In the current CAP, only nine Member States have dedicated agroforestry measures, and these often have very low budgets, or are restricted to certain regions. Multiple factors contribute to the low adoption of agroforestry, including bureaucratic hurdles, insufficient information and awareness, limited funding, worries over eligibility for basic payments, a lack of knowledge and expertise, and other challenges. 👉 Please find all detailed information in the EURAF presentation here: https://lnkd.in/daE4zyfF

Last month, in collaboration with the Agroforestry Netwerk Nederland, we hosted an insightful session on agroforestry for agricultural councillors from #Asia and #LatinAmerica 🌳. During the session, our Jinke van Dam, Roderick Zagt, and Bastiaan Louman explored the roles various stakeholders can play to promote the wider adoption of #agroforestry and the conditions needed for success. Hosting Hon. Kanali Evans Alfred Mtambi at the 9th Agroforestry Symposium It was a privilege to host Hon. Kanali Evans Alfred Mtambi, Regional Commissioner of Mara, at our demonstration plots in Musoma during the 9th Agroforestry Symposium, organized by Vi Agroforestry. The event highlighted sustainable agricultural practices and the vital role of indigenous seeds in promoting food security and climate resilience. We showcased the remarkable performance of local seed varieties, including: Maize: Mehhe, Ibandawe, and Irriqutoo. Sesame: Unyenyemwa, ideal for short rains. Sorghum and Groundnuts, which thrive under local conditions. Additionally, we demonstrated sustainable farming techniques, such as: Organic Fertilizer (BOKASHI): Enhancing soil health and productivity. Push-and-Pull Technology: An innovative pest management system improving crop resilience. Hon. Mtambi commended TABIO and Vi Agroforestry for empowering farmers with knowledge and tools to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce dependency on synthetic inputs, and preserve biodiversity. Many of the studies presented during the EURAF conference in Brno last week reinforced the scientific evidence of the multiple positive benefits of #agroforestry for farm economics, rural landscapes, soil health, biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation. 🌳 🌾 📑 💶 🐞 🌿 💪 However, there is still much to be done. Only nine EU Member States have introduced agroforestry measures in their CAP Strategic Plans. Furthermore, compelling evidence shows that regulatory constraints drastically limit the freedom farmers need to adapt their practices to local conditions and to establish effective mixed farming systems such as agroforestry. ❌ Luckily, the agroforestry community around the European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) si strongly motivated and equipped to face these chellenges, as the event last week showed 💪 EURAF itself is very much active. 💪 The scientific evidence presented at successive European conferences have enabled the federation to draft Policy Briefings in the identified crucial areas of sustainability.
