Getting your organisation to reach net zero is not easy. Over the past few years those who have responsibility for driving down carbon emissions have needed to grapple with lack of clarity on net zero definition, and ever changing standards landscape, competing prioritises and budgets... to call out just a few challenges. Organisations with a footprint in Bristol are fortunate that Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership created a Climate Leaders group to help those pioneering organisations with net zero targets to share best practices and work though common challenges. Ask: If you are based in Bristol and are working towards Net Zero, make sure whoever is responsible for managing and implementing your net zero is aware of this group. Offer: A free peer to peer network of local net zero practitioners that meet quarterly to support each other to make progress. Bristol has an ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030. The Bristol City Office (Bristol One City) Plan sets outs goals to encourage carbon reduction among individuals and organisations.
We had a brilliant Climate Leaders session this morning, kindly hosted by Wiper and True. It focused around an honest and thought-provoking discussion about 2030 net zero targets, levels of engagement with climate action amongst senior leaders and staff, competing business priorities in a challenging context and how to stay resilient and well whilst doing this difficult work. It feels important to create a space for open conversations about these topics - a big thank you to all those that took part. Jamie Beck Alexander is one of my all-time climate heroes. In 2021 I watched her "Every job is a climate job" Ted Talk. Like millions of others, I was inspired to focus my time on bringing change from within companies. Fast forward to 2024 and with climate breakdown only accelerating, Jamie now speaks a different language, revealing a sad truth: Some of the worlds most influential companies are portraying themselves as climate leaders, when behind the scenes they are actually greenwashing, delaying and obstructing climate progress. And even the most respected, well-intentioned not-for-profits can be co-opted by corporate interests. I now admire Jamie even more, for speaking truth to power, and refusing to be a part of this broken system. I believe courage is the missing ingredient for the green transition. In the talk, Jamie asks: "what are you willing to do to save our planet?" I would like to reframe and invite you to consider the question: "What are you NOT willing to do to save our planet, and those you love?" https://lnkd.in/gxmJrY_c

"The Climate Crisis and Nonprofit Leadership: Time for a Paradigm Shift Throughout my career in the nonprofit sector, I've observed a troubling pattern that undermines our efforts to combat climate change: Inherent conflicts of interest: Many climate-focused nonprofits rely on funding from the very industries they aim to reform, potentially compromising their mission. Lack of accountability: Without proper oversight, some organizations prioritize self-preservation over measurable impact. Centralized, elite governance: Decision-making often rests with a small group disconnected from frontline communities most affected by climate change. These systemic issues hinder our progress in addressing the climate crisis. Real change requires a transformation of: How we conduct business Our institutional structures Our individual actions and choices The question we must ask ourselves is: "What are we willing to risk for the planet?" True climate leadership demands transparency, grassroots involvement, and a willingness to challenge the status quo – even when it's uncomfortable. It's time for a metamorphosis in how we approach environmental advocacy. Are you ready to be part of this crucial shift? Share your thoughts on how we can create more effective, accountable climate leadership. #ClimateAction #NonprofitReform #Sustainability"
This TEDx talk about climate leadership felt really raw... and it really resonated. I keep wondering how much the non-profit sector has unintentionally been enabling the continued destructive practices of business and government? Sometimes, as Jamie Beck Alexander talks about in this talk, because our interests are tied up with the status quo through funding partnerships, reputation, relationships. Sometimes because we* are so committed to the impact of our projects and organisations that we (unwittingly or no) let ourselves be the distraction that provides continued social license to operate to terrible, or even mundanely bad, actors. Sometimes we so want to believe in the goodness of the people we've built relationships with inside these organisations that we downplay the actions of the institutions they represent. But when deep down we know, the cognitive dissonance can be painful. Listen to the talk - even if you're not already working in climate change or the non profit space. It's part confessional, and part call to action. (Mainly the latter.) As Jamie says, "more of us are realizing that we have to challenge this system with every ounce of courage we have or step away from it all together: away from really comfortable jobs, away from prestige, in order to have the freedom to call for transparency and to call for accountability. And we're taking great risk to do so... What are you willing to risk to save our planet?" * The "we" in this post is problematic. I spent too long trying to untangle it and got myself more tangled. And perhaps that's a big part of the problem: because humans are connected, so often it IS a "we" - the "we" of an organisation or of a collective or of a set of social norms. And it's easy to forget that each of us has power to shift those things by shining a light on it. Which is exactly what Jamie does in this talk. https://lnkd.in/gBQGnc8N

As Co-chair of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders—a flagship initiative of the World Economic Forum—I am delighted to join Ester Baiget, Jesper Brodin, Feike Sijbesma, and Rich Lesser, along with a cohort of 130-member CEOs across 12 industries, in driving the strategic priorities of the Alliance. The private sector has a critical role to play in accelerating the clean energy transition by tackling the challenges of Scope 3 emissions decarbonisation, and driving the policy narrative for a low-carbon regulatory environment. As a member of the Alliance since 2019, ReNew is among the few organisations to have declared a 1.5°C-aligned target validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), with an aim to be net zero by 2040. I look forward to engaging with the talented group of global leaders and CEOs committed to delivering tangible climate solutions and innovations across geographies and businesses. Sumant Sinha’s leadership of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders brings significant experience to the community committed to raising bold climate ambition by doubling down on Scope 3 emissions decarbonisation and policy engagement for a low-carbon regulatory environment.
