Villages like Kanye have transformed significantly in size, structure, and economy, revealing the tension between modern planning approaches and indigenous practices. By understanding the successes and limitations of past interventions, we aim to pave the way for planning strategies that respect cultural identity while addressing the demands of urbanization. As we reflect on the rapid urbanization spreading across Africa, we are reminded of both the complex challenges and incredible opportunities it brings. Rural migration and population growth are reshaping our cities at an unprecedented pace. At Mitrelli, we see the immense potential within these challenges, and in alignment with this, represented by our Urbanization Sector, we recently participated in the African Urban Forum (AUF), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Themed "Sustainable Urbanization for Africa's Transformation: Agenda 2063," the forum addressed the pressing need for adequate housing solutions that enhance the quality of life for the continent’s fast-growing urban populations. It also enrolled key discussions on the future of urban cities in Africa, climate adaptation strategies, trends in urbanization, and the strategies required to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forum also emphasized the need for major investments, with Africa requiring around $130 billion annually for infrastructure development. However, each dollar invested in sustainable urban infrastructure could generate up to $4 in returns, underscoring the long-term benefits. As urbanization becomes an “irreversible trend,” urgent action is needed to develop cities that are economically resilient, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive. At Mitrelli, we are deeply committed to this vision, focusing on sustainable urbanization that unlocks the full potential of urban growth while addressing critical challenges such as housing shortages, infrastructure gaps, and inequality. Our ultimate goal is to create urban communities that promote economic stability, environmental sustainability, and social equity for everyone. We believe that together through strategic partnerships we can achieve the continent's sustainable development goals and shape urban policies that drive Africa's transformation. #Urbanization #Sustainability #Development #Impact #SocialEquity

Urbanisation in Africa: Opportunities Amid Challenges Africa is home to some of the fastest-growing cities in the world. By 2050, urban populations are expected to triple, according to the UN. While urbanisation presents economic opportunities, it also brings challenges like housing shortages, strained infrastructure, and environmental risks. Fantein’s Urbanisation and Migration Studies help stakeholders navigate these complexities. By assessing the socio-economic impacts of urban growth, we provide tailored solutions to support sustainable city planning and development. Let’s harness the power of urbanisation for Africa’s future. WE KNOW AFRICA #UrbanDevelopment #Sustainability #FanteinResearch

Launching the Urban Resilience and Local Governance series for Tanzanian cities 🚀 ✨ ICLEI-Africa has collaborated with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Tanzania to publish a series of thought pieces on urban resilience and local governance in Tanzania. The series covers five important thematic areas: 📜 Politics and planning; 🌆 Informal settlements; 🌽 Food systems planning; 🥬 Urban greening, and ♻️ Community-led urban waste management. The concept of urban resilience is especially relevant to plan in a sustainable and holistic approach and not in “silos” as is often the case. Visionary governance is needed, especially in African cities like Dar es Salaam. 🔗 To access the five pieces, head to: https://lnkd.in/dbDTvJxt #UrbanResilience #LocalGovernments
