ER: Commercial LEO destinations (CLDs) will not simply replicate the services available today on the ISS but diversify and expand capabilities. The CLDs will be smaller, more efficient, and more focused on R&D and manufacturing, designed for both government and private-sector customers. CLDs will sit at the center of the new space economy, operating as both a platform for Earth-based industries and as a gateway for deep space travel. CLDs will enable not only space data but the space environment to become a tool to drive many industries, including healthcare and biology, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, mining, tourism, and so many more. The 2024 #EOOS Technology Forum, themed “Catching the momentum in ocean observing technology: optimizing value and data provision,” is scheduled to convene on March 13, 2024, at Oceanology International, Excel, London, running from 09:45 to 17:45 UTC. Responding to the pressing need for extensive ocean data at sustainable costs, the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) has been working on enhancing the efficiency and value of ocean observing platforms and systems. EOOS encompasses the infrastructure, platforms, sensors, and experts dedicated to gathering essential data about Europe’s oceans, seas, and coastal waters. Bringing together technology developers, manufacturers, and users, the 2024 EOOS Technology Forum aims to facilitate knowledge exchange on a wide array of platforms and sensors, irrespective of their complexity or cost. The overarching goal is to improve the accessibility of ocean observations by addressing key technological challenges such as maintenance, adaptability, deployment ease, and sustainability. Through collaborative discussions, the forum endeavours to identify and promote opportunities within the technology community to advance ocean observing optimization, both in Europe and globally. The forum will centre on exploring the transformative technologies and systems propelling marine observing infrastructure and initiatives forward. Participants will delve into innovations and practical strategies necessary to enhance value, return on investment, and data provision while ensuring cost-effectiveness and asset integrity. Participation in the event is open to all registered attendees of Oceanology International, offering an opportunity to collectively navigate the future of ocean observation technology. This workshop is organised by EuroGOOS, European Global Ocean Observing System with the support of JERICO-S3, Ifremer, OGS and SMHI, and DOOS. JERICO-S3 coordinator, Laurent Delauney will co-moderate Session 1 “Accessible technology: Needs of the ocean observing community” and the closing session. UK Space Agency, Strategic Investment Board and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (DAERA) have announced a £360k competition, using the Contracts for Innovation funding mechanism. The new competition, Space Technology to predict, detect and monitor Algae in Lough Neagh aims to harness the combined capability of satellite and space-based technologies and services with aquatic applications to observe and predict ‘blooms’ and inform the development of strategic thinking and initiatives to protect the Lough. This is a Phase 1, with a budget of £360k anticipated to be shared across three bidders. The competition is open to all eligible organisations, registered in the UK, EU and European Economic Area that can demonstrate a route to market for their solution. Great example of the Unlocking Space for Government programme in action! NI SPACE, along with the UK Space Agency and the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural affairs (DAERA) has launched the first phase of a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI), where three companies have been awarded £360,000 collectively to develop satellite technology and data that could be used to improve the detection and monitoring of blue green algae in Lough Neagh. “Space technology offers a plethora of opportunities when it comes to addressing pressing environmental issues,” explained Robert Hill, SPACE Cluster Manager. “We are proud to partner with the UK Space Agency and DAERA on this project to showcase the transformative potential of satellite systems and technologies in tackling the blue green algae issue in Lough Neagh and beyond. By investing in innovative solutions, we’re aiming to demonstrate how advancements in space technology can drive better environmental monitoring, management and protection for the benefit of our communities and ecosystems.” Each of the three selected suppliers will be expected to develop their proof of concepts by March 2025 and if successful, a second phase may include further development of these concepts. “Protecting our waterways and ensuring the health of our environment is a top priority for DAERA,” commented Andrew Muir, DAERA Minister. “The pioneering use of space technology through this project represents what will hopefully be a significant step forward in mitigating the challenges posed by blue green algae. “I commend the companies involved for their forward-thinking solutions and am confident that this collaboration will lead to valuable developments in environmental monitoring and protection.
