As another #COP29 has started, we are reminded that #CarbonEmissions remain at an all-time high, and a significant part (15GtCO2, equal to 40% of energy-related carbon emissions or 21% of all GHG emissions) is connected to the #BuiltEnvironment. From the manufacturing of electricity (50% of electricity is used in buildings), the direct on-site emissions (fossil fuel for heating), and the manufacturing of materials to construct the buildings and infrastructures. It is imperative that we #HalveEmissions by 2030. Let’s remind ourselves that the journey will create new and long-term jobs and economic opportunities, is good for our health, saves us a lot of money, and, yes,… is good for the climate and the planet. ✌ The good news is that #ClimateSolutions, #technologies, and #innovations already exist. There are plenty of impactful knowledge, reports, and initiatives that tell us how we can do it, from the local scale, to national and global. Day after day, I see the dedication of thousands of people working in this space, fully motivated and committed to achieving the common goal. #Finance is not a problem; there is plenty available (if we would just deploy and allocate rightly). 🤨 So what do we need more? Why are we not seeing the change at scale that we need? What stands in the way of progress is the fragmentation of the many stakeholders that make up the built environment, which means that individual actions and interests do not converge behind a common goal. 🌍 We need an unprecedented and #RadicalCollaboration, a #SystemicApproach to ensure all these knowledge, efforts, and resources are better aligned and support each other. ➡ This is why WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development launched with the support of hundreds of organizations the #MarketTransformation #ActionAgenda for the Built Environment. 🌍 Was COP29 just a cop out? The missed opportunities at COP29 underscore the urgency of stronger leadership and collaboration. Overall, it looks as though governments from many countries will not lead the charge in the fight to reduce CO₂ and it could be many years before we see a significant change. This leaves an opportunity and obligation on the private sector to invent and develop novel and innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions, save energy costs and create profitable global businesses. At 350 PPM, we incubate and accelerate some great practical inventions and technology that have a real impact on addressing the world's challenges in the race to net zero. We don’t rely on governments to change, but act and make a difference. Hopefully, governments will start to wake up to the challenge but in the meantime, we are moving forward with our clients and perhaps the public sector will take inspiration from us and others in the private sector. #COP29 #BAKU OUTCOMES What is the agenda for #COP30 - #Brazil? What about #NCQG? Let's have a look..... #Theme of COP 29- "Investing in a Livable Planet for All”. #Key #Highlights New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (#NCQG): It aims to triple climate finance for developing countries to USD 300 billion per year by 2035 from the previous goal of USD 100, with developed countries taking the lead.   o  (The NCQG is a new annual financial target that developed countries must meet from 2025 onward to provide climate finance to developing countries. It will replace the previous commitment of USD 100 billion per year that developed nations pledged in 2009 but failed to deliver. o  Promote a Just Transition: The NCQG can support a just transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy, creating new jobs and opportunities while protecting #vulnerable #communities.) #Carbon #Markets #Agreement: A landmark agreement to finalize the mechanisms for carbon markets, including country-to-country trading (Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement) and a centralized carbon market under the United Nations (UN) (Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement). · Article 6.2, allows bilateral agreements between countries to trade carbon credits based on mutually agreed terms. · Article 6.4 seeks to develop a centralized, United Nations-managed carbon emissions offset and trading system. Declaration on Reducing Methane: Over 30 countries, including the US, Germany, UK, and UAE, endorsed the COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste (India is not a signatory).  The declaration targets the waste sector’s methane emissions, which contribute to 20% of global methane emissions. It focuses on five priority areas: Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs), regulation, data, finance, and partnerships.    This builds on the Global Methane Pledge to reduce global methane emissions by 30% by 2030. #Transitioning Away From #Fossil #Fuels COP29 also provided the opportunity to implement the outcomes of last year’s COP28 landmark Global Stocktake Agreement, which called for transitioning away from fossil fuels and aligning climate pledges with the 1.5°C target. Unfortunately, Parties could not come to an agreement to include clear references to transition away from fossil fuels, so negotiations will be revisited at COP30 in Brazil. #What for #COP30 and #Beyond  Throughout COP29, there was a growing call for reform in the COP process. Stakeholders emphasized the need to make COPs more inclusive and focus on shifting away from negotiations to implement and deliver concrete actions.    Looking ahead, COP30 in Brazil will be a key moment. As a key five-year milestone, COP30 in 2025 will have countries submitting updated NDCs to align with the Paris Agreement. With unresolved issues from COP29 carrying over to the Bonn Intersessional in June and COP30, the stakes are high for governments to show ambition and unity. #Climate #Change #Save #the #planet

Net Zero Delivery Summit 2024 - held at Mansion House London today. The Net Zero Delivery Summit (NZDS) 2024 is hosted by the City of London Corporation in partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative and sponsored by EY and LIIBA. The summit marked the halfway point between COP28 in the United Arab Emirates and COP29 in Azerbaijan. Michael Mainelli reminded the room and those on line in his opening speech today of the existential threat posed by climate change - one that, left unaddressed, will not only impact everyday life for each and every one of us, but how we do business too. “It is estimated that $6tn will be required globally each year to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Private finance has the critical role to play, over 85%, in financing green innovation, green infrastructure, and green growth." 139 UK investors, £89 Billion responsible business funds, £11.6 Billion climate finance committed by the UK. 🌍 As we await the final outcomes of #COP29, we can declare #CAKE's mission in Baku a success. 🫡As this year's #UNFCCC - COP29 Azerbaijan - is the 'Financial COP', CAKE's contribution focused mainly on the improvements & developments in carbon pricing policies, both in the EU and globally. 🌐 💡Our #COP29 journey began with side event moderated by Simone Borghesi, featuring Robert Jeszke, Ottmar Edenhofer, Luca Taschini, Laura Ritchie and Stephanie La Hoz Theuer. Disscusion centered on integrating carbon removal into climate policy targets. 💡 The role of carbon pricing was further explored during CAKE and Energy Community, side event, where we presented the results of CAKE's #LIFEVIIEW2050 analysis of the recommendation to extend the #EUETS to new sectors and #removals, but also the impact on third countries. Valuable contribution came from Artur Lorkowski, Aliona Cara-Rusnac, Alex Riabchyn and Oleh Bondarenko. Many thanks to Monika Figaj for her excellent moderation. 🌐 🔋The intensive CAKE agenda at COP29 also included a contribution to the side event on the EU Clean Industrial Deal, organised by Forum Energii and moderated by Joanna Pandera PhD, where Robert Jeszke had the opportunity to exchange views with Jan Dusík and Rosana Santos. 🌐 🎙️ 🗣️ Another outstanding side event, organised by CAKE, took place in the Greece at COP Pavilion on Monday 18 November and was a great opportunity to compare the views of policy makers with those of researchers. While Robert Jeszke and Simone Borghesi emphasised the need for diversity in climate measures and recommended including removals and linking carbon pricing mechanisms, policy makers - Kurt Vandenberghe and Gerassimos Thomas - highlighted the hurdles of linking emissions trading schemes globally at the moment. 🗣️ Krzysztof (Chris) Bolesta suggested exploring both "hard" & "soft" ETS linking and offsets, to reduce the mitigation cost. This amazing debate ended with a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities, proving that we are all on the same path. 🌐 🎙️ As COP29 is more than just a place for climate negotiations, but also an opportunity to meet, exchange views, opinions and learn from each other, the CAKE team jumped at the chance to capture and share valuable input from leading climate policy experts.
