High Court quashes controversial coal mine permission on four grounds. Planning partners, Nigel Hewitson, Chrisa Tsompani and Stephanie Hall explain: Interestingly this was an application for coking coal to be used in the steel industry, rather than for domestic power. If that had been the case, it may have resulted in a more difficult decision for the new government given the ongoing issues with energy security and prices. Having said that, it is difficult to see any other outcome following Finch, and it remains to be seen whether West Cumbria Mining will seek to have the application redetermined. Australia (and most western countries) have similar problems to this with a large demand for minerals, but government funded opposition to new mining projects. So production moves offshore to meet that demand from places where environmental and labour regulations are weaker or poorly enforced. The net result is worse outcomes for the world as a whole and weaker supply chains for the west. Victoria Gold Corp.’s Eagle Mine, which closed in June after its gold-processing facility collapsed and spilled cyanide into the surrounding rivers, will cost about C$150 million to restore, according to preliminary estimates from Canada's Yukon government. But if history is any guide, the cost may turn out to be much higher. Canadians are still on the hook for long-forgotten mining disasters in the Yukon, which has been a hub for gold miners since the Klondike Gold Rush more than a century ago. The Yukon’s Faro Mine — roughly the size of Albany, New York and once the world’s largest open pit lead-zinc mine — was abandoned in 1998 and is still undergoing an extensive and complicated remediation process today. In 2002, Canada’s government projected the remediation to cost around C$200 million; in 2022, it revised the figure to C$5 billion. Yukon’s government said the cost of the Eagle Mine cleanup will be covered through government loans to accounting firm PwC, which was assigned to manage Victoria Gold after the mining company was placed into receivership in August. It began lending funds for the cleanup last month, advancing C$50 million to PwC to cover the first stages of remediation. Mining workers are worth $1 million each to Australia's national economy - according to national economic analysis cited by The Courier-Mail. The public also recognises coal's value. A recent poll revealed: - "Coal is critical to the Australian economy." - "Coal is key to affordable, reliable energy for households." - "Metropolitan Australia relies on regional coal-producing communities." - “Without coal for Australian steel, Australia will not be able to meet its housing targets” - 55% support more coal energy production, with only 25% opposed. Overlying layers of rock and earth tend to sink or shift to fill these areas. When that sinking or shifting reaches the earth’s surface, it is called mine subsidence. The Mine Subsidence Protection Program was established to pay for damage to homes that results from coal mine subsidence.
