The main takeaway from Parcel+Post Expo in Amsterdam is clear: the “locker race” has begun. With 30-40 locker providers competing for the attention of couriers and postal services, we’re seeing diverse strategies— KEBA Group and Modern Expo are focusing on building on demand, while InPost and Bloq.it grow with retail partners, and Quadient and YEEP! Lockers expand alongside couriers.
Significant investment—hundreds of millions of Euros—is flowing into locker infrastructure, and it’s likely to continue due to three key factors:
1. Rising Demand for Out-of-Home Delivery: European couriers, retailers, and consumers alike need efficient, flexible delivery options, making lockers essential.
2. Government Support: Regulations, like Belgium’s mandate for locker options to reduce urban congestion, are accelerating adoption.
3. Critical Mass Potential: More lockers mean greater convenience and parcel volume. Current penetration is estimated at only 20-30% of potential, leaving room to grow across Europe.
The race for scale is on. Networks must expand quickly to secure courier partnerships and capture parcel volumes. In the next few years, market leaders will emerge, shifting focus from expansion to optimizing locker use to maximize returns.
Looking forward to thoughts from my network!
