Important update on #PFAS in #FCMs in the US --> The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring the phase-out of PFAS from grease-resistant paper food packaging. The project follows an announcement in February that manufacturers had stopped selling PFAS-containing grease-repellent coatings in the country. The FDA told Chemical Watch News & Insight it started gathering food packaging samples in March to test the extent to which PFAS-containing grease-proofing substances remain available to consumers. The agency predicts that it will finish the assessment around September. The agency plans to look at 150 samples of coated food contact paper, non-coated food contact paper and molded-fibre food contact materials (FCMs) collected during routine inspections of food producers. Articles of interest include microwave popcorn bags, butter or margarine wraps, frozen entrée molded-fibre trays and boxes designed for fatty shelf-stable food. For more on PFAS in FCMs or any other products, contact your Account Manager, Sales rep or me!

GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES (GMPs) IN THE FOOD INDUSTRIES. Whenever we are purchasing foods from the supermarket, we are trusting that the manufacturers have created a product that not only tastes good but also free of any form of contamination be it physical, chemical or biological. Just as we rely on other facilities to make a product that is safe our customers are relying on us to do the same for them. When foreign substances find their way into food, they can result in contamination which cannot only make customers sick but can also lead to product recall, probable legal action against the company and damage to the company's reputation. In order to curb contamination of foods, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) release guidelines that established Current Good Manufacturing Practices for food industries. Individual facilities must then look at this criteria in details to design their own GMPs to keep the food they work with contamination free.

This morning the FDA released the long-anticipated draft guidance around Phase II voluntary sodium reduction targets for packaged foods and food service establishments. The new guidance, focusing on commercially processed, packaged, and prepared foods in the marketplace, would support reducing sodium intake to about 2,750 milligrams a day, about 20% lower than intake prior to the Phase 1 targets. As this guidance is still being finalized, the FDA will be hosting a webinar to address questions and will be taking comments on the guidance through mid-November. What do you think about FDA’s actions to encourage voluntary sodium reduction across the food industry? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. #fda #regulatory
