What is Sustainable IT? Sustainable IT is the strategic leadership of enterprise technology to minimize its negative and maximize its positive impact on the environment and society (SustainableIT.org, 2023). It is how we do a better job with the production, use and disposal of IT assets that contribute to the depletion of natural resources, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. It includes a lifecycle focus for the designing, using and disposing of computers, servers, phones, network and associated devices and subsystems efficiently and effectively, with minimal or no impact on the environment. It is how we source technology in a responsible way, and it is how we develop and utilize technology with no harm. CHALLENGES: High initial costs: Implementing Sustainable IT solutions often requires significant upfront investment in energy-efficient hardware, software, infrastructure, as well as investment in data collection and analysis activities to determine strategic imperatives to meet sustainability goals. Complexity: IT systems rely on a complicated mix of people, networks, hardware, software, data centers and procurement practices, not to mention diverse standards and practices across the globe. Translating the Jargon: Ensuring compliance with various environmental and reporting regulations can be complex and time-consuming especially if IT and sustainability are speaking different languages. Lack of awareness: There is often a lack of awareness and understanding of what Sustainable IT means, as well as what the benefits of Sustainable IT are throughout the organization, bottom to top. Readiness: Considering a large part of becoming sustainable is setting targets based on the footprint of IT, sometimes the maturity of understanding your footprint isn’t where it needs to be. BENEFITS: Cost savings: Sustainable IT can lead to significant cost savings by reducing power consumption and increasing product longevity. Environmental benefits: Reduces the environmental footprint of IT through sustainable practices, energy-efficient hardware and reduced resource consumption. Improved brand reputation: Companies that adopt Sustainable IT practices can enhance their brand reputation and appeal to environmentally and socially conscious consumers. Compliance: Ensuring the right people with the right skills to drive a Sustainable IT strategy can help companies manage the diverse stakeholder ecosystem to comply with regulations to avoid potential fines, and harm to reputation. Readiness: Having a green focus and reporting on things like the emissions of your footprint may help to add priority to improving IT practices that are not as mature. So again, what is Sustainable IT? It is a way that companies can contribute to environmental and social sustainability by also achieving economic benefits by improving their overall system performance. #rethinkIT #sustainableIT

"Technology for Good" is a noble pursuit, but we must acknowledge its inherent complexities. While technology can have positive impacts, it also has adverse effects if we are not mindful and responsible. Each paradox reminds us of our challenges, from the environmental impact of production to societal inequalities. However, embracing these paradoxes can prompt us to question our assumptions and navigate the intersection of technology and society with greater care. By doing so, we can create a future where innovation is synonymous with sustainability, equity, and ethical considerations, ensuring that technology truly serves the well-being of all. #TechForGood #Sustainability #EthicalTech #Innovation #SocialResponsibility

To grasp the essence of 'Digital for Good', it is essential to acknowledge that technology, even when created with the best intentions for the greater good, is not inherently immune from producing adverse effects in society. Technology itself is not inherently sustainable or positive. A comprehensive understanding of 'Digital for Good' starts by thinking against oneself, especially as a technologist, with the acknowledgment of some critical paradoxes, paving the way for a more mindful and responsible approach to technological development in society. There's no technology without environmental debt. Chaos theory applies to technology. Jevons paradox challenges technology's efficiency beliefs. Band-aid solution is a technology trap. Technology-fixes pledges for no ease. Technology advancement does not necessarily mean progress. Technological determinism only fits in theory. Tomorrow's technology promises don't solve today's realities. Innovation-equity paradox exacerbates digital divide. Technological exploitation always has hidden human costs. Ethical Technology only exists as a reflection of its creators' values. Technology has no exclusivity on innovation. Yesterday's technology decisions set limits to new technology adoption. Technology-Regulation gap is the best call for responsible technology. Digital for Good is about acknowledging the current and long-term impact of paradoxes posed by technology to address its unsustainable nature or implications for the well-being of society. https://lnkd.in/eMSAe2fN #DigitalForGood #Forbes #TheHamiltonMannConversation #HumaneTechnology #Thinkers50

Looking at work in the technology industry to meet the challenges of sustainability and decarbonization, the article details that the tech industry, which contributes 2-3% of the global emissions of greenhouse gases, also faces enormous challenges and opportunities. It details that one of the biggest opportunities for the tech sector lies in addressing emissions in its supply chain, which account for a major share of the sector’s overall carbon footprint. It emphasizes how advances in process intelligence enable companies to achieve a granular but overarching view of greenhouse gas emissions across their complex supply chains, allow them to understand supply chain inefficiencies, and implement targeted sustainability regimes. The article underlines two key drivers of the tech industry’s sustainability efforts: mounting regulatory pressures and changing consumer expectations.
