“If employees do want access to mindfulness apps and sleep programs and well-being apps, there is not anything wrong with that. But if you’re seriously trying to drive employees' wellbeing, then it has to be about working practices.” — Oxford researcher William J. Fleming said in the New York Times. We created a free guide for employers to move their wellbeing strategy from apps and other individual interventions to a focus a culture change. Today marks #WorldMentalHealthDay, a time for contemplation and action. In this light, I opened the week with an invigorating dialogue on wellness with our paraprofessionals and participated in Canadian Wellbeing at Work World Summit. These experiences sharpened my focus on cultivating work environments that prioritize well-being and empower our team members to reach their optimal performance levels. In the wake of COVID-19, it's clear that our talent teams have experienced significant burnout. Recognizing that we haven't fully recovered or revitalized from this period, I am renewing my commitment to bolster my personal wellness regimen. This involves consciously reducing mental burdens, embracing restorative sleep, and reconnecting with the core purposes that drive my professional endeavors. As legal professionals, we must shift our perspective on resilience. Endurance, often glorified as a virtue in our field, should not be misconstrued as a measure of dedication. Lasting peak performance is achieved not by mere perseverance but through connecting work to purpose, acknowledging and respecting our limits, visualizing success, and learning from our failures. On this World Mental Health Day, I am committing to trying to create a workplace that not only acknowledges these truths but actively supports them. I encourage you to join me in this commitment. If you notice a colleague grappling with mental health challenges, take a moment to extend your support. Offer an empathetic ear, guide them to appropriate resources, and simply be there for them. Such gestures of understanding and compassion can be transformative—not just for them, but for you as well. Together, let's build a culture of care that elevates our entire professional community. Why do most employee health solutions not really work? Because they don't address the root cause, says Harvard Business Review. Most workplace solutions, for ease and cost reasons, are either employee assistance programs (EAPs) or preventative tech solutions, like mindfulness apps. But they don't lead to much change. Through my work I have found that bespoke wellness assessments followed by a health plan work really well and individuals see a significant improvement even after 3 months. Functional Medicine is a root cause medicinal approach to health. Looking at the whole person, not only the symptom - which is often a body part in distress. https://lnkd.in/dWbwuGpu
