The US$2 trillion textile market is considered one of the most polluting industries in the world, producing approximately 600 billion metres of fabric annually. The industry is responsible for significant water pollution, industrial waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable textile technology company Xefco is looking to change that. Breakthrough Victoria is investing $2.5 million in the early-stage tech company, whose plasma coating technology allows for the dyeing and finishing of fabric to be completed in a single process without using any water. Good news in the field of synthetic textile circularity: #BASF has developed a material called #Loopamid, a polyamide 6 (PA6, also known as nylon 6) made from 100% synthetic textile waste. #Zara is one of the first brands to use this material to design a jacket 100% made with Loopamid. And innovation doesn’t stop here , #LanzaTech’s biological process captures and converts steel mill emissions that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, then ethanol through a fermentation process and ultimately into low carbon polyester yarn. #Zara has also piloted this new material with small scale Party Dresses. But the problem remains immense, with the World Bank estimating that global textile production generates around 92 million tonnes of waste per year. Sustainability, circularity, second-hand and responsible consumption are essential to stop this mountain of waste.
