The inner workings of a deepfake algorithm are complex. ⚙️ But the algorithms’ “secret sauce” has two important components. The first is that they develop a deep understanding of one person’s face and learn how to map those attributes to another face. Since most people have mouths, eyes, and noses in roughly the same place, a deepfake algorithm can analyze the characteristics of that anatomy and learn it to an exceptional level of detail. It then manipulates the features in a second video to match the features seen in the first. The algorithm does all that while keeping the original video’s general style and look. Another interesting deepfake algorithm characteristic is that they’re comprised of pieces that work in opposition of each other. As one piece manufactures phony data, there’s a secondary part that is trained to flag this phony data, helping to improve the results by pointing out what appears to be fake. A deepfake program can act as its own coach and teacher to improve the output. The results are a synthetic video that could be used with good or bad intent. When considering a synthetic video, it’s not hard to imagine why it might be dangerous. There’s the obvious risk that a person’s synthetic words or actions could incite someone to do something bad or dangerous. But an additional risk is that synthetic videos might start to undermine the believability of genuine videos. Privacy experts are understandably concerned that a deepfake might be used to spread misinformation on social media... AI has become a vital part of our lives, helping us in numerous ways, from simplifying daily tasks to tackling complex global issues. However, as AI advances, there are concerns about its potential to deceive, raising important questions about its role in our future. Early examples like chatbots showed how AI can mimic human conversation, sometimes blurring the lines between what’s real and artificial. Recent studies have uncovered instances where AI has acted deceptively, such as tricking humans in online interactions. While AI deception can have negative consequences, like influencing elections or manipulating markets, there are also situations where it could be beneficial, such as in therapy or cybersecurity. https://lnkd.in/dNKFiMnh #ai #election #human #conversation #future #cybersecurity #globalissues #studies #influencer #interaction

Cutting edge research makes the world go round After getting inspired by Jason Haddix's ISSA Denver Chapter presentation on how gen AI can be used for cybersecurity, I've been doing a lot of digging and found two outstanding papers on that topic: ✔ First was "From ChatGPT to ThreatGPT: Impact of Generative AI in Cybersecurity and Privacy" (https://lnkd.in/gBrKY7uF). Maanak Gupta, Ph.D. and team found 23 (!) use cases for generative AI and cybersecurity, ranging from attacking ChatGPT itself, to using it to run offensive and defensive campaigns ✔ Next up, "Digital Sentinels and Antagonists: The Dual Nature of Chatbots in Cybersecurity" (https://lnkd.in/gDYVRH88). Hannah Smzurlo and Zahid Akhtar mapped the progress of AI language models from the 1940s through the present. What's more, they talked about the value that each new generation of models brought. Reading their timeline made it easy to track how generative AI hit a tipping point and went from a novelty to a force to be reckoned with. ➡ While it's not a paper, shout out to Fabrice Rasir for his "Digital Sentinel" artwork (https://lnkd.in/gPrwZeH7). Just as cybersecurity is being transformed by AI, so is the art world and Fabrice Rasir is an AI artist to watch #breakingintocybersecurity #generativeai #blueteam #threatintelligence
