I'm a passionate public speaker and advocate for neurodiversity. Representing both the National Neurodiversity Youth Council and the ADHD Hub Gloucestershire charity, I've had the privilege to share my journey at various public events and even on BBC Radio. Having faced challenges with my own disability in school, I aim to be a beacon of hope for others, letting them know they're not alone in their struggles. Hi, my name is Ynés, and I will turn 18 in October. I was diagnosed with Dyscalculia at age 9 after my Mum noticed my distress with anything involving Maths. We were just about to move to Abu Dhabi, so I feel thankful that I was diagnosed before leaving the UK, as it would have been much harder to deal with overseas. Numbers will not stick in my head at all but give me song lyrics or a drama script and I learn them in minutes and commit them to memory for life. I am currently in China and will shortly move to Cairo. I have been studying in international schools over the past 8 years and this has opened my eyes to the world, but I have never met another person with Dyscalculia. Many of my teachers have never heard of it and I spend much of my time having to explain or justify my needs to them. I can’t count (excuse the pun), how many times someone has told me that I will just have to get used to it. Nevertheless, I have been fortunate to meet a few amazingly understanding and supportive teachers who have helped me get where I am. Dyscalculia impacts my life daily not only with maths and science, but also with timelines in history. It even impacts learning Chinese due to the intricate strokes in the characters, and most of my Chinese teachers have thought I was making that excuse up as they have never heard of my condition before. My time keeping and organisation is terrible, but Dyscalculia isn’t all negative as it has made me a very accepting, understanding and passionate person. I am delighted to represent the Dyscalculia Network as part of the National Neurodiversity Youth Council.” R2D2-MH Project

International Day of the Boy Child: Celebrating Their Strengths and Supporting Their Growth Every May 16th, we celebrate International Day of the Boy Child to recognize the unique experiences boys face and emphasize their well-being, education, and positive inclusion in society. At Nuture Child Development Clinic, we understand that boys face a complex world shaped by societal expectations around masculinity, mental health struggles, degrading or harmful stereotypes, emotional needs, and uneven academic journeys. These challenges can impact their development. We can support them by ensuring: Safe spaces: Let boys express emotions freely. Challenge stereotypes: Celebrate their full range of emotions. Positive role models: Surround them with healthy masculinity examples. Open communication: Encourage mental health conversations. Equal opportunities: Ensure access to quality education and resources. Together, let's nurture boys' strengths and empower them to be healthy, confident individuals who contribute to a society valuing equality. This International Day for Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate Assistant Research Professor. Edith Luhanga, who is collaborating with Dr. Skye Adams from the University of the Witwatersrand on a groundbreaking study on designing applications that use artificial intelligence to enhance the ability of parents and health workers to detect and address feeding difficulties in young children with autism in Africa. Feeding difficulties affect up to 90% of children with autism, often manifesting as challenges with swallowing, food selectivity—such as only eating foods with specific textures or colors—and disruptive mealtime behaviors. Addressing these challenges often requires therapy, but in Africa, there are very few trained specialists and therapy sessions are often prohibitively expensive for families. This research aims to bridge these gaps by co-designing innovative and accessible solutions with parents and health workers in South Africa. Learn more about the research here: https://lnkd.in/et_CbUa9. CMU-Africa is committed to advancing disability-inclusive research towards fostering our shared value of inclusion #IDPD2024

With a Young Scholars award from the Foundation for Child Development in 2018, I was able to study the impact of the Trump administration's restrictive immigration policy changes on school communities. In a previous post, I discussed the ways educator work and well-being were impacted. Below, I share a bit about the impact on Latina mothers and children in elementary schools: Latino/a/e children in low-income immigrant communities were exposed to anti-immigrant, anti-Mexican messages at school, in their neighborhoods, and in the media. This precipitated discussions within homes about safety, rights, race and immigration. Mothers reported engaging with schools to seek mental health supports for distressed children & then disengaging with schools upon feeling dismissed. To support children in low-income immigrant communities, philanthropy is encouraged to attend to ways to support school based mental health in low-income immigrant schools. Effective anti-bullying programs that support teachers, parents and students are also needed. See more recommendations discussed in our 2022 paper, "Racialization, discrimination, and depression: A mixed-method study of the impact of an anti-immigrant climate on Latina immigrant mothers and their children" https://lnkd.in/ef5TEYNy #socialjustice #edequity #mentalhealth #earlyeducation #Latinohealth #philanthropy

#AutismAcceptanceMonth Words matter in neurodiversity. Embracing neurodiversity means respecting individual preferences in language. While some prefer person-first language ("a person with autism," "a person with Down syndrome"), research has found that a majority of the autistic community prefers identity-first language ("an autistic person"). It's crucial to ask directly about someone's preferred terms, promoting inclusion and respect for all. This awareness extends to clinicians, ensuring holistic care for individuals with neurodevelopmental differences. Let's foster understanding and acceptance through mindful language choices.
