In the past, parents lived their lives and brought their kids with them too. Something's changed though in our society. There are stark differences in parenting across cultures. I won’t pretend to know them all— but ive summarized some general things here: → Western society tends to favor adults in society AND family units cater to kids. → The rest of the world tends to mold society to cater to all demographics AND family units cater to adults. What do I mean by this exactly? In other words: → The US has zero support for parents AND parents’ lives revolve around their kids. → The rest of the world has real support for parents AND parents live their lives and bring their kids with them. See the difference? This post isn’t about weighing the merits of this particular difference. But moreso about how it wasn’t always this way in the US. It used to be closer aligned with the rest of the world. I’m not here to break down why. But to highlight one SPECIFIC thing: We seem to have lost our ability to transfer our values to our kids. I see it with my own parenting: → when I reach for the iPad at the beginning of dinner out with the kids Would I rather interact and talk to them? Hell yeah! To anyone without kids… you’re like… so do that! As a parent, you know what I'm talking about here. It’s not so simple. IYKYK, right? I came across this video and my gut reaction was negative. But I watched the whole thing and thought about it for a while. Now, you might say he’s yelling which is no good. Is he, though? His voice is definitely raised. But is he angrily shouting? I’m not so sure based on just the video. He’s shaking his finger in his kid’s face. → That’s no good either. I personally would not do that… and I don’t recommend it. The rationalization may be it’s a tactic to get the kid to LISTEN. It may be effective in the moment but does carry some risks to it. BUT the question you have to ask yourself is this how you always are with your kid? If you are…you are. And you’re not alone. If you’re not, you’re not. And you’re not alone. If this is literally the first time you did something like this to your kid, I’d argue the risk for harm is low. Trauma is caused by repeated behavior since that’s how modeling works: → kids observing repeated behavior. Doing this ONE time is unlikely to cause real harm for a child. But oh boy does this kid now understand the severity… and more importantly… → the value of RESPECTING his mom. ⚡ If you want to get taste of how to get more TIME, JOY, and AVOID that parent GUILT along your dad journey, sign up for my newsletter in my profile or in the link via comments below. I share weekly playbooks on: → how to find more time in the day → resources on activities covering all age groups → learning common child behaviors and how to respond effectively _ Enjoy this? ♻️ Repost it.
