We are pleased to announce that applications are open for the Aquaculture Experiential Opportunities for Undergraduate Students (AquEOUS) Fellowship, an USDA Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates (REEU) at the University of Maine's Wabanaki Center and Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) and in collaboration with Wabanaki Youth in Science. This unique fellowship offers undergraduate students from around the nation an opportunity to use indigenous science and STEM concepts to solve real-world problems in aquaculture at the University of Maine’s world class aquaculture facilities. Mentorship will be provided by interdisciplinary faculty and indigenous knowledge keepers. Through this paid fellowship, students will have an array of research foci from which to choose. They will work on hands-on projects using concepts learned from their mentors as well as seminars, field trips, and workshops addressing indigenous knowledge, applied aquaculture science and science communications. Room and board are provided at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, ME for 10 weeks. We invite students and faculty to learn more about the Aquaculture Experiential Opportunities for Undergraduate Students (AquEOUS) Fellowship and apply by February 15th. PHD DEFENCE. On 17 September 2024, Wanhe Qi from DTU Aqua will defend his PhD thesis on new methods to estimate biofilm activity in recirculating aquaculture systems. The defence can be followed online or attended in person at DTU Hirtshals Campus. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are land-based facilities that offer a more sustainable approach to fish farming by allowing a high degree of water reuse and maintaining controlled environmental conditions. However, these conditions can also promote the growth of microorganisms, which often form biofilm—a community of microorganisms attached to surfaces. In RAS, biofilm can develop on tank walls, pipes, sumps, biofilters etc. While biofilm can offer benefits like enhanced nutrient cycling, waste degradation, and resource recovery, it can also cause biofouling, pathogen proliferation, and odour problems. To ensure a stable and healthy environment for fish production, biofilm must be controlled to maximize their benefits and minimize their negative impacts. One challenge in RAS is the difficulty of monitoring biofilm activity. During his PhD research, Wanhe developed new, simple, and rapid methods for this purpose by measuring oxygen changes. These innovative methods have been used to assess biofilm responses in RAS biofilters, particularly in relation to peracetic acid disinfection. The findings provide a new perspective on understanding biofilm and offer valuable tools that can be applied both in the aquaculture industry and beyond. The water samples collected from FQM (Kansanshi mine) were taken to the laboratory for analysis. Water has many parameters to be looked at, however, our research objectives were specific to look at: pH, Temperature, Salinity, Conductivity, TDS (Total dissolved solids). These parameters entails so much for both human beings and aquatic species. As a fish scientist, am more interested in understanding the water quality of a specific environment. This will help make sound decisions as to how much the water is contaminated and recommend the proactive measures to be taken in order to protect and preserve biodiversity in aquatic environment. My core scientific interest is in the subfield if toxicology and nutrition with respect to aquatic and terrestrial ecology. These subfields of biology are very intricate and requires proactive approach in order to have good food security and mitigate climate change. My undergraduate thesis has given me a good opportunity which helped to understand the impact copper - deposits on Oreochromis andersonii (Tilapia) in the Kafue River (Kitwe). This research also focused on levels of copper concentration and how much is useful for a fish and also will not affect human beings. Am looking forward to further my research in a different but similar dimensions with the focus on: impact of fecal waste matter on fish species. This will expand to also expand on the number of various species of economic importance (consumable). The research will document first aquatic stream/river of interest, collect water parameters for approximately - a year for insight differences in water parameters. #aquaticscience #watersampling #research #aquaticbiology #environmentalimpactassessment
