Free movie event tonight! And i'm in it!!! Dear Friends of the CF Community, Life’s challenges can be more formidable for some than others, even among those who share a common bond, but it is as a community that we rise to face these challenges. A group of 10 people with cystic fibrosis (CF) wanted to share their message that anything is possible to the next generation growing up with CF, and the 26.2 Miles Apart project provided them the platform to do just that. Even before the availability of the new, life-changing CF specific modulators, ten people with CF agreed to run the Boston Marathon as a team only to be briefly stymied by the pandemic. Then another group of ten people with CF came together in 2021 as the next "26.2 Miles Apart" team to run the 125th Boston Marathon, proving to themselves, their community and the world, what is possible through a shared purpose and sheer determination. These are some of their stories… Please join us for this free event in the Seaport during NACFC, at the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter (100 W 2nd Street, Boston) at 6:30, Friday September 27th, to commemorate the 26.2 Miles Apart Team with food, drinks (beer, wine, soda, etc.), music by Qwill & Samantha Farrell, and an art exhibit by friends from our CF community locally and worldwide. We will be joined by family, friends and those attending the CF conference. No tickets necessary but feel free to donate to our sponsor, Closing the Gap Foundation (flyer with link attached, picture below), and space is limited so join us on a first come first serve basis. FAQ Is there a policy on CF patients attending this event? We are utilizing the same policy that the CF Foundation uses, see here: https://lnkd.in/eUxcrRm5. We also acknowledge that patients and families must make their own decisions, and we cannot guarantee that more than one CF patient will not attend this indoor event.

Please consider donating in support of my efforts to end ALS. This will be the tenth year I will be participating in the ALS Network’s Napa Valley Ride, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS, because I’m committed to supporting those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to spreading awareness for the urgency to find treatments and cures. I have been a proud member of the ALS Network Board for 12 years and also worked at Cytokinetics for 18 years (a muscle biology company that has been pursuing drugs to treat ALS). Sadly during this time I have lost many friends to this grievous disease and it further commits me to supporting finding a end to ALS. Please join me in this journey and contribute to the ALS Network. What is ALS? Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and, eventually, to breathe. Why We Urgently Need Your Help? Every 90 minutes, a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may be diagnosed in their lifetime. For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public. Caring for a loved one with ALS costs an average of $200,000 each year. Your Impact by donating? Everything the ALS Network does ensures access to essential care services, free of charge, and accelerates the search for effective prevention strategies, treatments and cures for ALS. Fundraising and awareness are essential to fueling this progress. Please follow the link below for the ALS Network’s Napa Valley Ride, Walk & Roll to Cure ALS to make a contribution: https://lnkd.in/giKR5-NU If you would like to join me at this great event click the link below!

The Raikes Journal published an inspiring short story on Friday's edition, alongside the lead story you can see leading things linked below. The story is the latest installment in the efforts being made to raise £17.5 million for a new oncology centre for Gloucestershire in Cheltenham - what is billed as the Big Space Cancer Care Appeal. When the edition was emailed out to Raikes subscribers at the end of last week we'd just heard where £2 million of the £8.5 million already raised came from and wanted to share it. But what really inspired us was the incredible effort by two brothers from the county who watched the video featuring Anoushka Duroe-Richards (by Moss Davis of Gloucestershire-based Singularity Film) and were so moved they went on to raise several thousand towards the cause. Take a bow Clive and Dave Organ, 60 and 61 respectively. The pair cycled more than 1,600km from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, and climbed Mount Snowdon while on the trip as well! The main story - about the hotel sale - is a snippet of news I heard from Superdry-founder Julian Dunkerton and wanted to see what was afoot. Just why had the owner had put the hotel up for sale? It’s no secret that hospitality is difficult for many at the moment, but was that the reason? Was there a buyer in the frame? What would it mean for the adjoining restaurant, Brasserie Blanc Cheltenham, and were rumours that the hotel was looking elsewhere in Gloucestershire true? So many questions. We’re talking about The Queen’s Hotel,of course. The answers to all those questions are in the story. TO GALA OR NOT TO GALA? From Town Hall Agency: “It’s not uncommon to hear that galas aren’t driving as much money as they used to. I’ve heard from multiple organizations this year that it is a struggle to secure honorees. It’s also harder to get people off their couch and to the gala. At the same time, I see organizations [whose] galas are raising more than they’ve ever raised before. And I’m certainly not saying there’s no place for them. I think the problem isn’t actually with galas at all. We’re losing touch with WHY we’re bringing donors together. Not surprisingly, the pandemic shook up some of this thinking. When galas couldn’t happen in-person, all of us were forced to reevaluate the WHY. Making the rounds at fall galas last year, I observed confusion in terms of what the in-person gala experience should be today. It’s not that galas are dead; they’re being reimagined. And this reimagination requires clarity of mission and objective to consider what shape they can and should take moving forward. So maybe the best way to solve your “gala problem” isn’t actually to think about your gala at all. It’s actually to think about your donors. Who are they? What do they value most? How are they influenced?” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ezSdrijQ

I’ve been accused of not liking Galas. Not true. But, what if you decide to pause the Gala & spend that time building relationships? Well you can ask my client who did just that and saw a wild result. Here’s what happened…. 👉👉👉 Well, in the last couple of months FOUR donor conversations have yielded MORE than their entire Gala netted last year. Read that again. I don’t hate galas. I just want galas to be used strategically….as a STEP in your major donor’s experience with your organization. Not, THE lead experience a donor has with you. Here’s what happened: 💥They pushed against traditional events because they were exhausted and cash flow wasn’t steady. 💥They knew in their guts there was a better way to raise more money. 💥They reached out to me for a new model, strategy, and approach. 💥We removed roadblocks that keep donors from giving their best gift. 💥We reframed how they talk about their work into the donor’s POV. 💥We identified the financial path to their true need - this year & 3+ years. 💥They slowed down and shifted into one-on-one conversations. 💥They learned to solicit donors outside of appeals/events/ applications. 💥They now ask for what they need (vs. what they think a donor will give) And now, they’re on a different revenue trajectory. Now, we’re working to set this rhythm into the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual habits that will change their organization long term. This is why I work with orgs for a minimum of 12 months. You can make this shift too. ---- Last thing… When the organization started having deeper conversations with supporters, admittedly they said, “We don’t deeply know our donors. With some, we haven’t ever had true conversations with.” If your staff is having the majority of donor interactions during event or appeal season, you have an opportunity in front of you. How about you? What do you need to take a pause on?
