My relationship with community recovery goes back to my earliest days… I was two-years-old when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. Our parents sheltered us in the bath with a mattress over our heads. The next day we went looking for my mother's eternity ring, her Christmas gift from my dad. Amazingly, we found it amongst the rubble that was once our house. It was Australia's most deadly cyclone. Our father stayed to rebuild the town while we moved to Toowoomba where my extended family lived. The thing is, as bad as that event was, it wasn't the worst thing that happened to us. We were lucky we survived. My dad was a carpenter raised in the bush with the skills to rebuild. We had a significant extended family and a community that supported us. We were able to survive and thrive. It remains a powerful experience for our family that grounds me. Today as I work as a practitioner as CEO for Australian Business Volunteers (ABV), it's so important to me that no one gets left behind. Catastrophic events don't have to be catastrophic for everyone. Communities can be prepared for the event, for both the immediate response and the recovery. These are approaches we need to deploy even more in response to Climate Change. In the 21st century that cohesion and belonging can be lacking. Back then, I had a huge extended family. We went to church and we all knew each other. Everybody knew if there was something wrong in a family, a death or a challenge. We all kinda mucked in. But now there's greater mobility, greater loneliness. We have to be more intentional in the ways we build community. What kind of activities have you found help build your community? Rural and Indigenous communities many times have employees that wear many hats. They do not have the ability to hire extra personnel to assist with grant writing, do the additional work needed to build resilience against future disasters, or have the additional matching funds that some grants require. Philanthropy organizations can help fill this crucial gap needed for these communities be prepared for disasters.
Unfortunately, this is not a new conversation, but excited to be part of an organization working to change this paradigm! Always proud of the work Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) is doing to build vibrant, healthy, and thriving rural and Indigenous communities throughout the west. #RuralMatters

📅Beneficiaries of the Triple Resilience Project (3R) in Muanza and Cheringoma have received 76 goats in recent weeks. 🐐✨Animal Promotion Strategy This will allow families to strengthen their livelihoods by raising goats. 3R is promoting a sharing system in the communities: as soon as the goats reproduce, the 4-5 month old kids are passed on to another member of the community, ensuring that the benefits are multiplied and reach all the communities. 🌱 Resilience in Action The 3R Project is committed to promoting food security and the economic development of communities. This sustainable initiative is important for ensuring that more families have access to a continuous source of income, contributing directly to the resilience of local communities. Together, we are multiplying opportunities and building a more prosperous future! #TripleResilience #CommunityDevelopment #RuralDevelopment #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #RuralEconomy #StrongCommunities #HeadMultiplication #FLF #SustainableSolutions #swedeninmoz #ifdcglobal

In the next couple of decades, #Millennials are set to inherit about $90 TRILLION DOLLARS. This video illustrates the result for many of them. Giving a lot of money to anyone who is unprepared to use it can lead to disaster. Americans of ALL ages, including Millennials, have been unwise with their money. **Here are two thoughts for your consideration** 1) If you have wealth, learn to use it wisely and prepare your children/heirs NOW to use it wisely. If they don't want to cooperate, give all or most of it to a reputable charitable organization of your choice. 2) When this much money is coming down the pike, in the hands of inexperienced and naive people, a certain group people is waiting for it. They feed on it. It can be like the annual Crocodiles vs. Wildebeest migration in Africa. Like this: https://lnkd.in/gDd36ifu A fool and their money are soon parted. Don't be 'that guy.' 😉

We want communities that are safe, connected and empowered. To help us get there, we've partnered up with Massey University to lead an original research project into lived experiences of communities affected by the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in early 2023. We know that during disasters, frontline communities form an essential part of response and recovery. They may complement or fill needs not otherwise met by authorities, and communities that work together recover faster, becoming more resilient. Through surveys, interviews and focus groups we seek to understand how communities in Auckland, Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay responded. With those communities we will co-design a roadmap to guide authorities on how to build climate resilient, better-prepared communities. If you were you living in Auckland, Tairāwhiti or Hawke’s Bay region during the Auckland Anniversary Weekend Floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, we want to hear from you! Your lived experience will help build a roadmap for how authorities can better support communities to respond and recover, and build a climate resilient Aotearoa. Everyone is welcome to take part! We especially want to hear from those impacted or who helped with response efforts, and those from the Māori community. Understanding what happened - from the people affected - is crucial. We backed Environment Hubs Aotearoa to undertake research that gives our communities a voice. As we all look to create a more climate-resilient future, we need to learn from the experiences of those impacted by the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle a year ago. This is knowledge that can support robust disaster response plans for our communities. Knowing what worked well, and indicating where the system failed, is just the starting point. Listening to these views and acting on the information and recommendations will be crucial. We are looking forward to seeing this work come to life in response-planning. Climate change is impacting us now and how we adapt to this increasingly real future is yet to be decided. 🗣 We encourage all those who have been affected by the climate-related weather events of 2023 to have their say. Huge thanks and acknowledgement to Georgina Morrison and Jennifer Pannell and Massey University for getting this research up and running. https://bit.ly/3OEwWx2 #communityresilience #climatechange #disasterresponse #climateadaptation Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao Auckland Council David Hall Alec Tang Yii Petrus Carl Vink Beth Rose

Join me in supporting this important acquisition, connecting protected lands around the Yantabulla wetlands:
📣 Exciting news! You can help us protect one of Australia’s least modified river systems. Nil Desperandum, meaning 'nothing is to be despaired of', is a stunning 4,037-hectare property that connects to our Naree Reserve and Yantabulla Station, which Bush Heritage protects with our partners, South Endeavour Trust. Acquiring Nil Desperandum will create a nature corridor of 35,000 hectares of managed land, helping to reconnect landscapes and support the thriving of native species. To buy and protect this unique place, we need to raise $2.6 million. 💚 Thanks to the generous support of two donors, every dollar you contribute will be matched up to $1.3 million! 👉 Follow the link to find out how you can make a difference: https://lnkd.in/gcShCW6 📷 Annette Ruzicka 📍 Budjiti Country, NSW #WeLoveNature #LandConservation #NSW #ProtectNature
