In general, when an experienced program director leaves, the EMS education program gets burnt to the ground. And a brand new director is like those settlers who went west: blind to academic administration, under-resourced for the mission, and facing terrors they don’t even know exist. Turnover of EMS Education Program Directors has been on the order of 30% annually for at least the last few years and from my POV is growing at an alarming rate. What does this turnover do to pipelines of providers? Stagnates them and sometimes even destroys them—I’ve recently seen at least two programs lose a Director and simply drop their EMS program. This should TERRIFY us all. Can we do anything about it? That is what I’m pursuing right now. I’m trying to get out into the ditch with directors. I know what MY struggles were, but what about YOURS? What are the common pitfalls? How can we help the newbies avoid those and be more immediately successful? Can we help them NOT get their teeth kicked in? If you’re an EMS Program Director (or have been one in last 5 years), I have 7 questions. My intent was to only take 15 minutes of your time, but directors have things to say and nowhere else they really can say them, so I’m now allowing up to 60 minutes—and I’d love your input. Where does this all go? I envision a free guide for new PDs: “Your first 100 days”…the vision is still blurry in my mind, but gets clearer with every conversation. My goal is to support resiliency in the newbies by helping them see over the horizon of shrinking resources, shifting politics, surprise personal issues, and any other nuggets I can mine from those who “have the t-shirt”! If you’d like to participate, schedule here https://lnkd.in/g-3eYUWV (feel free to just do a phone appointment). Let’s be the mentor we wish we’d had!

As I look back on over fifteen DEI awareness workshops delivered at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education this year, I feel an immense sense of gratitude and accomplishment. These sessions were bespoke, tailored to the organization’s needs, and engaged around 160 participants. The feedback? An average rating of 8.5—a testament to the power of creating safe and meaningful spaces for these conversations. I didn’t share much about this journey along the way. Instead, I focused on presenting DEI in a way that felt approachable—removing the daunting misconceptions and shifting the lens to celebrate the beauty and strength of diversity. When DEI is framed the right way, something incredible happens: people talk, they connect, and they leave feeling inspired, not overwhelmed. This was one of the phases of IHE Delft’s DEI journey, and what a giant step it was. After consulting with the organization over the past year, seeing these workshops come to life and spark awareness was truly rewarding. Before I close this chapter, and move onto the next, I want to leave three reflections for anyone embarking on this work: 1. Meet your audience where they are. Tailor the conversation to their context and needs. 2. Frame DEI as an opportunity for connection. When we connect, we grow. 3. Celebrate the small wins. These moments of progress build the momentum needed for lasting change As I filmed this empty classroom—the space where so many impactful conversations took place—it reminded me that the work we do today paves the way for a better tomorrow. Thank you to everyone at IHE Delft for your openness, honesty, and commitment. Here’s to continuing the journey in 2025! #DEI #InclusiveLeadership #DiversityAwareness #EmpathyBuilding #RodVisionInMotion

Saluting African American female professors -- Past and Present This week, the African American Female Professor Award Association in Massachusetts will induct its 2024 class of educators. View the video to honor those educators on whose shoulders we stand and learn about ways find success in academia. A special thanks to Traci Talbert, founder of the African American Female Professor Awards for her leadership. According to a U.S. News and World Report survey of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities, "...only about 7% of full-time faculty in fall 2022 were Black. The majority of full-time faculty in 2022 – 72% – were white." U.S. News also reports that " things haven't changed much from fall 2018," based on similar data from the National Center for Education Statistics, which found that 75% of full-time U.S. faculty were white."
