🌟 Student Associate Spotlight: Ryan Bose-Roy 🌟 📚 Introduction Program and Year: Biomedical Engineering and Political Science '24 Hometown: New York City, New York Favorite Thing to Do in New Haven: Going running in the morning after it rained the night before and watching the misty sunrise from science hill or east rock. 🚀 Motivation to Join CBIT: "In 2023 I did a healthcare hackathon in Boston called MIT GrandHack, and my teammate was a Yale School of Management student working for Yale Ventures. When I told her that I wanted to learn more about the ecosystem bridging devices and care, she recommended I apply! I knew about CBIT from being a Biomedical Engineering major and having gone to a couple Yale Healthcare Hackathons as well." 💡 Opportunities at CBIT: “Definitely meeting people like Margaret, Michelle, and David, who know a LOT about entrepreneurship at Yale. They’re quite passionate about helping medical ideas at Yale grow, and that’s been a huge factor in cultivating a frame of mind in me to think about how I can create things to improve human care and think about healthcare more holistically.” 🧩 Impactful Project: ”One project I learned a lot from was building a database to house all the CBIT projects, and a pipeline to connect new projects with mentors and keep teams on track. You see quite generally the diversity of processes ventures can go through, whether in ideation or having already raised funding. In addition to becoming a lot more fluid with AirTable, I did appreciate the chance to think through what questions a team might need to answer when they’re just starting out or when they’re providing biweekly updates to a mentor.“ #YaleVentures #CBIT #StudentSpotlight #HealthcareInnovation #Entrepreneurship #Yale #BiomedicalEngineering #PoliticalScience #Biotech

Aligning the UK’s great science with investors who can help to apply and scale tech innovations. This is a v practical partnership between Imperial College London and Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Hub, contributing to the UK Growth Mission, led by the brilliant Ana Avaliani and Ramana Nanda
Last night we launched The Science and Technology Venture Capital Fellowship, a government-backed initiative to boost investment in Life Sciences and Deep Tech, unlocking growth and innovation. Together with Imperial College London, we welcomed Lord Patrick Vallance, Minister for Science, to our London Hub at Prince Philip House to officially launch this Fellowship. This initiative begins to address one of the key call-outs in our newly launched Deep Tech Report—the need for greater investment in these critical sectors. We were joined by the new Fellowship cohort alongside Dr. Hayaatun Sillem, Anne Glover, Sir John Lazar, Peter Todd amongst others, who shared insights on the transformative potential of this program for UK innovation and growth. A pivotal step forward for deep tech and life sciences. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology #DeepTech #VentureCapital #Innovation #LifeSciences

Really interesting program announcements today by Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) — the new UK funding agency modeled after DARPA with £800 million to spend on moonshot R&D projects. Two programs that caught my eye: 1. Partnering with Fifty Years to bring the 5050 program to the UK. Seth Bannon and the 50Y crew run this free fellowship to help scientists launch great companies. Any UK scientists should check this out. 2. Launching another fellowship with Pillar VC to embed AI scientists into research labs to help solve hard problems. With today's Nobel news, clearly it's an exciting time for AI in bio. Jump in, the water's warm! Very creative/entrepreneurial energy for a government agency. Side note: a few years ago I wrote about the challenges of navigating a career path developing scientific software: https://lnkd.in/gnVH8yEE It would be cool to see more computational fellowships like this get started—hopefully with a path towards long-term positions too.

Bridging Academia and Industry for Innovation in the UK One of the key drivers of the UK's innovation ecosystem is the close collaboration between academia and industry. These partnerships transform research into tangible business outcomes and boost global competitiveness. Here's how: 🔗 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs): Bringing academic expertise into businesses to solve real-world challenges. KTPs help companies innovate and improve productivity by embedding research-based knowledge directly into their operations. 🌱 University Spin-Outs: Universities like Oxford and Cambridge are leading the way in creating spin-outs, turning groundbreaking research into high-impact businesses. This has led to the commercialization of biotech, AI, and other cutting-edge technologies. 🔬 Collaborative Research Projects: Joint research funded by bodies like Innovate UK ensures that businesses have access to the latest scientific advancements while shaping the future of research through practical application. 🏢 Specialized Research Centers: Institutes such as the Alan Turing Institute provide the ideal environment for academia and industry to tackle complex, multidisciplinary challenges. The UK's approach to aligning academic research with business needs is crucial to driving long-term innovation. With government support, businesses are gaining the tools to stay competitive, and researchers are making a real-world impact. https://lnkd.in/dggZkd2n #Innovation #R&D #Academia #BusinessGrowth #UKResearch #Collaborations #KTP #SpinOuts #TechnologyTransfer SpotUp Francisco Valencia Baier Marcelo Lasagna Alejandro Santana Saavedra Natalia Vicente Loscos Karen Jones

Delighted to have been able to attend the kick-off event for the valorisation academy of UHasselt Tech Transfer today! Not every day you get to listen to someone with over 30 years of experience in the field of University Tech Transfer at multiple universities including Oxford University, it was an inspiring and insightful presentation by Tom Hockaday. Some highlights: 📊 Two additional ways to assess the readiness level of research that expand upon the TRL (Technology Readiness Level): 1️⃣ KTH Innovation Readiness Level (https://lnkd.in/eHuVegCj) which includes multiple aspects such as team, business, customer, funding, etc. in one easy to understand graph; 2️⃣ The guidance and impact tracking system, GAITS (https://lnkd.in/eUX4pHhM) which does something similar, but with a focus on medtech & biotech, including regulatory and clinical aspects. 💰 A visualisation of the "Valley of Death" in terms of funding, where a company needs to switch from making decisions based on what gives them grants to making decisions based on what creates revenue/what attracts private funding. 🏙️ His take on why we should call it a start-up community instead of a start-up ecosystem. An ecosystem in his opinion stand for eat or be eaten, while in a community we strive for being good neighbours to each other. 📖 Try to be narrative driven instead of numbers driven: who are you impacting, what amazing things are you working on? Telling stories makes it stick and way less boring. (His words, not mine. 😉 ) Kudos to the organizing team and thank you for the invitation! #techtransfer #valorisation #impact #collaboration #innovation
