Decisions like this illustrate why elections matter. Not just at the federal level because Presidents and U.S. Senators nominate and confirm Supreme Court Justices. That's important, but I'm talking about LOCAL elections. Who is your mayor. Who is on your city or town council. Who gets elected (in some communities) to law enforcement, or what authority existing elected officials have to appoint police chiefs, etc. These elections MATTER because they have a direct impact on what laws and ordinances your community will enact or enforce, and these are the structures that we live with daily. The "down ballot" choices matter, and these are the choices you, as a voter, have the greatest opportunity to influence by voting. So please, #VOTE in your local primary elections and #VOTE in November keeping this in mind.

Domestic violence victims living in rural areas can face increased barriers to seeking help according to a study by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania which surveyed survivors across the PA commonwealth. Victims feared that word of their abuse would spread within their small community where abusers often have connections to law enforcement and others within a survivor's safety net. Consider the following scenario: You and your spouse are out to dinner, and your kids are at home with the babysitter. On your way home, you get into a car accident. When you fail to make it home on time, the babysitter calls you repeatedly, but when no one answers, she calls the police. The police arrive and find your kids with the babysitter, who offers to stay with the children until a relative can be found to take them. But because the babysitter doesn’t have the legal authority to care for the children—even temporarily—the police have no choice but to call Child Protective Services. These authorities will take your children into custody until they can locate and/or appoint the proper guardian. "Who recruits these civic volunteers?", the CJI asked today after criminal antecedents of accused Sanjoy Roy were flagged before him Supreme Court has sought a response from the State of West Bengal on the process of recruiting civic volunteers after a concern was raised over private security being recruited. "The man had cases against him of domestic violence...", Court was further told about accused Sanjoy Roy. This prompted the CJI to ask, "How many civic volunteers do you have, what is the verification of antecedents that you do and where are they posted, are you posting them in schools?". 🔸 As we near the end of #16Days, we reflect on a harsh truth: mothers and children who have separated themselves from their abuser are #StillNotSafe. Through child contact proceedings, abusers can continue to control, threaten, and harm families 💔, while Scotland’s courts and Children’s Hearing System too often enable this abuse ⚖️. The gap between criminal and civil courts, poor risk reflection in social work and police reports, and a bias towards contact leave survivors vulnerable, even as research shows the harm this causes. Scotland can, and must, do better.
