Whether you have ever given to a nonprofit organization or only thought about it, I encourage you to watch this Ted Talk by Dan Pallotta. As a newcomer to the nonprofit sector, I found this Ted Talk hugely informational and educational, and recognize first-hand the misperceptions associated with nonprofits, overhead, and marketing spend. As 25+ year veteran in advertising and marketing, what Dan explains in his Talk, all makes perfect sense. My question is, where do small nonprofits get the seed money for the "investment spend" that will eventually (hopefully), generate that 40% increase? My instinct tells me, it is to find that sponsor who not only relates to and aligns with your mission, but who understands that their contribution might actually make a bigger impact if it is being utilized for “overhead,"—which by the way, is a necessity, no matter what sector you are in. We found the Generosity Commission's report thought-provoking. By redefining philanthropy beyond just formal nonprofits, it challenges long-held assumptions about the state of giving in America. The report highlights concerning declines in traditional charitable participation, but also the rise of more informal "everyday generosity." This raises important questions about the future of the nonprofit sector and how to best support all forms of positive social impact. I recently read an article about digital detox and fundraising work. Especially now when our inboxes and social media accounts are being inundated with asks for money (both charitable and political), the article inspired a few suggestions that I am sharing with our clients: 1. Handwritten notes still work. As a matter of fact, we hear from donors and clients that handwritten notes stand out to them. 2. Small events with board members or executive leadership help deepen relationships. It makes people feel special to be invited and to have an insider's peek. 3. Regardless of what platform you are using, make IMPACT the focus of your messaging. Showing donors how you are using their important contributions inspires them to give again and again. #impact #fundraising #philanthropy #digitaldetox #socialmedia #snailmail #directmail #handwritten #personal #personalization Michael Pettry

Why Donors Leave: 1) They aren’t 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱. 2) They aren’t 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 you are creating with their funds. Remember, it costs ~5x more $ to convert a new donor than to keep one active. A simple monthly email to thank supporters and update them on your social impact can make all the difference. If you're worried about end-of-year fundraising, take time this summer to thank them for their support and update them on the impact your organization is creating with their funds. I hope this helps! #DonorRetention #NonprofitSuccess #ThankYourDonors #EngagementMatters
