As an HR professional, an interest in education is vital. This month I am delighted to be supporting several in-school events, including career masterclasses at a local high school. As HR professionals we often talk about generational differences, using these huge generalisations about people born in broad periods. Don’t get me wrong, these have their use. However, I also think its important to pay keen attention to the education sector and what our future employees are being taught and how. It is also very enlightening to spend time with the pupils. What are their aspirations, and what are their fears? I find this can give really valuable information about how we need to adapt to welcome them in a few years. #Education #Generations #Futureofwork #HRConsultant

How much does your organisation prioritise future talent? There are 530,000 graduates every year. Around 200,000 come from a STEM background. There are also 340,000 apprentices, where 100,000 are in STEM. It is estimated that 400,000 jobs will be needed between today and 2050 to reach UK Net-Zero ambitions. However, 49% of STEM organisations report skills gaps in the current workforce. We MUST prioritise future talent. Hiring early-careers is like choosing to buy fair trade, organic produce. Do your bit as an organisation, build sustainable talent pipelines, don't "overfish" our talent market, invest in it. Take chances on early-careers. It'll surprise you. I'm revisiting this piece from 2021 because the issues persist. As an HR professional, I'll likely encounter candidates for internships or entry-level positions by winter or next year. These candidates would have enrolled in school around the time I drafted this post . In 2021, the JAMB registrar reported that 65.62% of UTME candidates scored above 160, a drop from 69.82% in 2020. Today's JAMB exam results showed that over 1.4 million candidates scored below 200, which should be the benchmark for tertiary institution admission. While some technical issues have been resolved over the years, the decline in education quality remains unaddressed. This clog in the system affects the candidate pool and requires input from various sectors, including labor and employment. The educational sector must equip candidates with the basics, and they can learn and grow on the job through learning opportunities. If we don't address the quality of education and the quality of students receiving it, we'll face a large pool of unemployable candidates.

Many companies prioritize the prestige of universities when evaluating candidates' degrees. While this is understandable, it often overlooks skilled and experienced professionals from less renowned institutions. It's important to recognize that students from prestigious universities may not always have superior skills, yet their alma mater's reputation often gives them an advantage. Is this fair, or should there be a more balanced approach to evaluating talent? Knowledge and skills should be judged rather than the institutions, especially since we can now learn everything online from the best resources available. #SkillsMatter #EqualOpportunity #Education #OnlineLearning #CareerDevelopment #Hiring #Recruitment #WorkplaceDiversity

Employers, we can learn something from this model taking root in Japan. Internships don't have to be months long and highly customized in order to serve their purpose. 1) Invite the most ambitious college juniors to participate for a few weeks in the summer 2) Give them a real-world business problem to solve and a small salary 3) Recruit the best and brightest based on their output as a strong indication of future performance. You get an easy pipeline of proven talent. Students get work experience and learn about your company. It's a win-win.

This is a very interesting model for recruiting early-career talent. I hope we will see more of this in the U.S. before long.
About 70% of firms in Japan now offer employment-linked internships

#T4summit #unlockingthehiddencurriculum I will be interviewing Asheesh Advani on 23rd November at 14:35 pm at the Deira International School - the venue for this summit. The topic is: "What is the one skill that young people need to be ready for the future of jobs?". I spoke on a related topic some time back and I thought this might be a useful read before this event. Do let me know what you think about the topic in the comments.
