EVERY DAY HEROES - MEET CHANTAL KASONGO Founder, Shiloh Place Orphanage https://lnkd.in/gsPA6Y25 We’re honored to share the inspiring story of our colleague, Chantal Kasongo, from Fairmont Waterfront’s housekeeping team. In 2010, driven by her deep-rooted passion for helping others, Chantal saved enough funds to return to her hometown of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There, she gathered a small team to carefully choose the ideal location for her vision: Shiloh Place Orphanage. What began as a dream has now become a thriving sanctuary offering much-needed shelter, care, and education to orphaned and vulnerable children. Today, Shiloh Place is not only a safe haven but also a place of learning, currently providing education for over 250 students on-site. Chantal’s dedication and belief that every child deserves a nurturing environment and opportunities for growth have transformed lives and continue to foster hope in her community. We are incredibly proud of Chantal’s impact and her unwavering commitment to making a difference both here in Vancouver and across the world. Unfortunately, there’s approximately 5.4 million children in orphanages globally, and 80% have been reported to have at least one parent or family member available to care for them. But, families in poverty are vulnerable, believing that giving their children to orphanages will result in better care and education. The reality for many children results in exploitation, abuse, malnourishment, forced labor, and even retrafficking to other orphanages for profit. In addition, there is a current, popular trend that combines voluntary work with tourism where traffickers receive money from received donations and organizations offering ‘voluntourism’ placements. However, there are anti-trafficking organizations committed to stopping the placement of orphanage volunteers thus ending the demand for volunteer placements that traffickers are profiting from. According to the National Youth in Transition Database, only 26% of foster care youth secure stable housing after aging out, leaving too many vulnerable to homelessness. These young people deserve a fighting chance, not just survival. Let’s work together to provide the stability and support they desperately need. Every youth deserves a place to call home. Consider donating to I Pour Life to help empower older, at-risk youth: https://loom.ly/yISLmiA #FosterCareCrisis #SupportYouth Source: National Foster Youth Institute, March 2023.

There is a clear need to advance a more inclusive economic future for rural America, which accounts for 85% of the nation’s persistently poor counties. This imperative for inclusive rural development, however, is not limited to rural communities. The geographic divergence that divides the country between “winner-takes-most” and “left-behind” places serves to harm the nation as a whole by concentrating productivity in too few regions while leaving large swaths struggling to meet their economic potential. Inclusive rural development is essential for building a strong and equitable society. By empowering rural communities and investing in their potential, we can create vibrant, thriving places where everyone can prosper. How can an inclusive approach to rural development bolster economic opportunity for communities? 📖Read "Inclusive Rural Development Enhances Quality of Life" to learn more about key issues in homelessness and housing and how you can help. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eGi3HheS #rural #life #development #givingcompass #giving #donors #philanthropy #NGO #guidetogood #charity #nonprofit #socialimpact

Indonesia has once again been named the most generous country in the world for seven consecutive years, according to the World Giving Index 2024. This remarkable achievement reflects the kind-hearted spirit of Indonesians who continuously support those in need. However, this generosity often comes with unintended consequences. Many Indonesians express their generosity by donating to orphanages, celebrating birthdays there, or conducting charity drives. While these acts of kindness stem from good intentions, they inadvertently sustain a system that promotes the institutionalization of children—a system that often denies them their right to grow up in a family environment. Selfies with children, donations of food, and temporary visits might feel fulfilling, but they perpetuate the cycle of dependency and exploitation within these institutions. Instead, generosity should lead into empowering families, supporting community-based care, and advocating for systems that prioritise family reunification and foster care. Real change starts with rethinking how we give. Together, we can ensure that every child grows up loved and cared for—not in institutions, but in families. Let’s transform generosity into a force for systemic change. #WorldGivingIndex #SocialImpact #EndOrphanageTourism #FamilyCare

How is this happening in Australia?? "I experienced homelessness while doing unpaid nursing placements due to cost. Not only didn’t the university care but the hospitals I was working at didn’t have any available products. I found myself stealing gauze and using the hospital showers to wash out blood-stained underwear just to get by." Our Bloody Big Survey found 77% of university and TAFE students had experienced period poverty, and the number of students having to improvise on period products had increased by 6% since 2021. You can download the full report here - https://lnkd.in/gNCCfw9z This needs to change. While we work to advocate for change you can help uni and TAFE students right now by donating period products to our Dignity Drive this August - https://lnkd.in/gAgdiTqP #sharethedignity #bloodybigsurvey #periodpoverty #University #TAFE #change #advocacy

Urgent Appeal from Jireh's Love Charity Organization Dear friends and partners, We're facing a critical situation at our orphanage. Due to lack of funds, we've been forced to stop our children's education. This is devastating, as education is their key to a brighter future. Without education, our children are vulnerable to: - Exploitation and abuse - Poverty and unemployment - Limited opportunities and low self-esteem But with your help, we can change this narrative! Education empowers orphans to become responsible citizens, breaking the cycle of poverty. Our orphanage is struggling to provide basic needs like food and shelter. We're prioritizing survival, but we can't let education slip away. If God has blessed your life, please consider supporting our children's education. Your kindness can: - Secure their future - Unlock their potential - Transform their lives Let's join hands to save their education! If you'd like to know more or get involved, please DM me for details. #JirehsLoveCharity #EducationMatters #SupportOrphanedChildren #BreakTheCycleOfPoverty #TransformLives #CharityWork #MakeADifference #Uganda orphanage
