Here are some great, tangible action steps you can do to address human trafficking and support survivors! Thanks, Kristin Vaughn, for the awesome rundown!! #Liluye #LiluyeSpirit
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month—What Can YOU Do? Every January, I get the same question over and over: What can I do to help fight human trafficking? I have no less than 30 messages and texts of people asking what they can do to help. So I wanted to come up with a guide of some sort. People assume you have to be in law enforcement or a survivor or working for a nonprofit to make a difference, but that’s not true. No matter who you are or what your background is or where you live, YOU have a place in this fight. EVERYone can so SOMEthing. We are so so over the "awareness" part of trafficking. So let's talk about ACTIONABLE, MEANINGFUL steps you can take: Get Involved Locally 👉 Almost every state has a human trafficking coalition or task force—find yours and join it. These groups work on policy, survivor support, and raising awareness in your community. Feel free to reach out to me and probably any other Survivor Leader- we are happy to direct you to vetted orgs and causes in your state. 👉 Contact your state and federal representatives about anti-trafficking legislation. A simple email or phone call makes a huge difference. Ask where they stand on trafficking laws and push them to support survivor-centered policies. Use Your Skills Whatever you do for a living, there’s a way to use it to help survivors rebuild their lives. 👉Cybersecurity/OSINT experts? Help track traffickers and find missing victims in our Signal groups. 👉Career coaches? Offer to help survivors build resumes, practice interviews, or develop job skills. 👉Realtors/property managers? Survivors struggle to find safe, stable housing—help them navigate the process. 👉Healthcare workers? Educate yourself and colleagues on the red flags of trafficking and advocate for trauma-informed care. ( Dr Laura Lederer & I have an incredible training for this specific thing!) 👉Artists/creatives? Offer free workshops or classes to help survivors heal through art. 👉Therapists? Consider providing pro bono counseling—just 10 hours a month to 10 survivors can change lives. 👉 Former/current military? There are so many things we need you guys to help us with! For example- what if we had 2 or 3 retired military folks that will go with victims to court when they have to testify? So they aren't intimidated by their traffickers? Amplify the Right Voices 👉Follow, like, and share posts from survivor leaders and frontline orgs doing real work. You might not think a ‘like’ matters, but social media engagement determines visibility. Support Ethical, Survivor-Vetted Organizations 👉Not all anti-trafficking orgs are created equal. Donate to those that survivors trust and support. If you’re not sure, just ask us. (continued in comments below bc there are literally many things you can do to help and LI won't let me list them all here due to word #) #antitrafficking #survivorleadership #connectthedots #HumanTraffickingPreventionMonth like, share and repost!

January is Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, dedicated to raising global awareness about human trafficking and promoting prevention initiatives. Traffickers are known to lure victims utilizing force, fraud, and/or coercion. The signs of someone being trafficked often include physical abuse, malnourishment, lack of legal identification, or unsafe working conditions. Together, we can make a difference, recognizing the tactics that traffickers use keeping us informed and vigilant, contributing to the end of trafficking, and preventing trafficking altogether. As we know, women are vital to conserving nature and ensuring our carbon markets are working effectively. In Costa Rica, this challenge is being tackled through an empowering agreement between the government and Indigenous communities. After all, the Indigenous women are the ones most affected by climate change there, and they hold the key to solve it. The collaboration and participation of Indigenous women and government promises to be a successful implementation of the Territorial Forest Environmental Plan that is meant to encourage sustainability of forest resources while respecting the norms of Indigenous communities. Recently, glimpses of the #MeToo movement have made their way into the music industry. Not just due to the rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs' high profile case where he is accused of sex trafficking and sexual assault, but other musicians that carry the same theme of systemic abuse and power imbalances. It seems that more and more society, especially those most vulnerable, are demanding accountability, creating dialogue and conversations about sex trafficking in the music industry, and elsewhere. Earlier this month, the Canadian government added an additional $5.5 million for human trafficking and victim support to agencies in Alberta. The funding is part of the $20 million dollar support that has been allocated over three years in this province, allowing for better prevention efforts, specialized trauma-informed survivor support, and improved law enforcement support specifically for First Nations police services and counseling agencies. Recently, the South African Climate Change Act, No. 22 established a clear foundation to address climate change. The main objective is to create a low-carbon society, mandating action from all branches of government to address the issue at hand, planning for long-term solutions. Once enforced, the major aspects of this act include allocation of a carbon budget towards greenhouse gas emitters, changes to government policies, and GHG (or greenhouse gas) mitigation plans. While these changes could improve their overall climate change impact, issues still remain, such as how they would address climate disasters and enforce repercussions for excess emissions as no penalty currently exists. However, with public participation and governmental and national collaboration, climate improvements can be made.
