Angie’s report, ‘Reimagining Marine Policy: Evaluating OSPAR's Response to the GRP Crisis through Creative Media and Regeneration’ (get in touch if you’d like to read the full report) dives further (from an earlier Substack post a few weeks back) into the OSPAR Convention from creative media and Regenerative Design and Development (RDD) lenses; it’s a case study weaving in our Floating Stories Lab initiative ‘Regenerative Tides: Sailing for Solutions,’ with the research aiming to benefit not only the academic community but also policymakers, stakeholders, and the public, offering a pathway to more resilient and responsive marine conservation efforts. This week’s Substack newsletter summarizes the report and its recommendations 🙏🏼 https://lnkd.in/ek-sCW9T

To increase sustainability we need to invest in climate resilient infrastructure. Credit Valley Conservation is helping prove the concept of discrete, building integrated storm water reservoirs to reduce peak volumes as shared by my colleague Kyle Vander Linden. Consider this as a solution for the next building you invest in, develop, design, construct, finance.
Credit Valley Conservation ‘s smart blue roof for the win 🥇! Our blue roof captured nearly 80 mm of rainfall over the weekend. That’s approximately 28,700 L of rain fall, and we can still hold another 80 mm before reaching capacity. Phil James James Cowan Bernadeta Surowiec (M.Eng., M.Env.Sc.) Practical application of storm water management for the built environment.
Credit Valley Conservation's smart blue roof successfully retained another 71.2 mm of rainfall this morning. This is in addition to the 48 mm that was caught last week Thursday. In total, we have accumulated a 119.2 mm (47,000 L) on our roof top with these two events. Lake Tahoe's Famous Clarity is in trouble. Why? Particles, Plankton, and Plastic. How do we know? We are the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. We are the research organization with the longest history at Lake Tahoe that has the modern-day tools, technologies, and expertise to understand this complex ecosystem so that we can make recommendations on how to protect the lake into the future. Follow us @UCDavisTahoe to learn about factors impacting clarity and so much more about Lake Tahoe.

In ecological restoration, the spotlight (not surprisingly) is on the success stories. But what about the epic failures - maybe there's something to learn from these too? In a new paper led by BlueCarbonLab PhD student Alexandra Rodríguez (congratulations Alex!), we explored global trends in applying decision science in mangrove restoration. Our paper finds that the use of decision-support frameworks and tools is increasing (yay!), but we still often lack consideration of social, economic, and ecological variables. I'm as keen as anyone else to roll up my sleeves and start restoring mangroves, but this due diligence is important and must not be overlooked. Fortunately, the availability of practical tools, frameworks, and support systems in the planning and implementation of mangrove restoration is growing, which will bring down costs. You can access the paper here: https://lnkd.in/gTSG8CuY Well done Alex in leading this paper and to the supervisory team that provided support: Micheli Costa Melissa Wartman Rifaee Rasheed Maria del Mar Palacios Deakin University #Mangrove #BlueCarbon #Oceans

Join or share your poster at our workshop at TerraenVision! At #TerraenVision in #Valencia in July, we organize the Workshop 'Transition towards Circular Land and Soil Management'; Building networks, bringing together interests and coping with friction in regulation. In the Netherlands the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, #Rijkswaterstaat, set up a national network with local authorities, industries, farmers and knowledge institutions on circular land and soil management. Within this network partners exchange knowledge and experiences, start projects together and develop tools to communicate and understand the drivers behind collaboration or the inhibitions to collaborate. These instruments help to find pathways towards cooperation fitting all the partners. An example of such a tool is the Social Readiness Level Instrument. Within this workshop we will share our experiences and show the working of the #SocialReadinessLevel instrument. We invite you to join us if you want you to learn about building a network with stakeholders, to find out about tools to share interests and prioritize joint activities. You are invited to try out some of the tools we developed and you get to know the do’s and don’ts in match making. We want to discuss with you how to overcome differences in interests and frictions in regulation in the field of circular land and soil management. If you have experiences in circular land and soil management yourself, we invite you to share your results or case study with a poster in this workshop. Proforest joins the Science Based Targets Network Corporate Engagement Program We are delighted to announce that Proforest is an SBTN Corporate Engagement Program participant, pledging alignment with SBTN’s goals and vision and contributing feedback and end-user insights to the development of SBTN methods and tools. By joining the program we are working to ensure that water, ocean, land and biodiversity - the global commons we all depend upon - are protected and restored. We are supporting the SBT Network by building on what the companies we work with are already doing and sharing the methods companies need to set Science Based Targets for nature. We are helping to develop and road-test the guidance for science-based targets for nature to ensure they are user-friendly and easy to implement. By becoming a member we can: ✔ Give feedback into design for more user-friendly methods and tools ✔ Gain early access into cutting-edge science ✔ Ensure the greatest impact on the ground in our advisory services ✔ Understand and prioritise action on nature For more information and to find out more about how you can get involved: https://lnkd.in/dxNpKH5
