The Local Government Association’s (LGA) recent report, Our Vision for Children, Young People and Families, highlights a critical issue in children’s social care: the prevalence of domestic abuse within #family settings. According to the report, concerns about domestic abuse were identified in 160,600 assessments (31.7% of those with factors identified) in 2023/24, while children were directly identified as victims in 55,040 assessments (10.9%). These figures are a stark reminder of the challenges we face in #safeguarding children. However, they also expose significant gaps in how we conceptualise, record the impact of domestic abuse on #babies and #children and develop our practice. November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Canada. Domestic abuse can occur in all intimate relationships, whether a couple is married or cohabiting, same-sex, or dating. It also occurs in parent-child relationships, extended family-child relationships, and sibling relationships.⠀ ⠀ Manitoba has the highest rate of domestic violence of any province in Canada. Domestic violence disproportionally affects Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit peoples, racialized women, and people living in rural and remote locations.⠀ ⠀ Living a life free of abuse and fear is a fundamental human right. Alpha House provides a safe place to heal and rebuild. We are dedicated to helping women and children who are committed to leaving an abusive relationship. We provide a full-time program of counselling and practical supports within a protective living environment. We know making the decision and taking the first step can be extremely difficult. As the festive season approaches, it's crucial to be aware of the increased risk of domestic abuse during this time. Data from the Office for National Statistics indicates that domestic abuse-related crimes represented 19.3% of all crimes in December 2020, compared to an annual average of 18% for the year ending March 2021. The Local Government Association and Women’s Aid have highlighted common signs of domestic abuse, including: • Jealousy and possessiveness • Control over attire, social interactions, and movements • Financial control or withholding essential items • Dramatic mood swings from kindness to aggression • Pressure to engage in unwanted activities Recognising these signs can be a vital step in offering support to those affected. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please reach out to local support services or contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline. Let's work together to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone this festive season. #DomesticAbuseAwareness #SupportSurvivors

Domestic abuse is a housing issue. It is the second most prevalent reason for a household to present as homeless to a local authority and a lack of safe, affordable homes is a leading reason why victims don’t leave an abusive household. Today's Human Rights Day marks the end of the global #16DaysOfActivism and an opportunity for us to recommit to the Chartered Institute of Housing's #MakeAStand campaign to support victims of domestic abuse. In recommitting to Make A Stand, we have pledged to: ✅ Implement a policy to support residents affected by domestic abuse. ✅ Ensure information about domestic abuse support services is available on our website and in other appropriate places so they are easily accessible. ✅ Implement an HR policy to support members of staff who may be experiencing domestic abuse. ✅ Appoint a senior champion to drive our efforts to support people experiencing domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can affect anyone in our homes, or in our teams, and we are dedicated to improving our support for survivors. Our homes, our people, our problem. If you would like to hear more about pledge, contact the Chartered Institute of Housing by emailing policyandpracrice@cih.org.

The For Baby's Sake Trust reveals that over 185,000 babies are present at police callouts for domestic abuse incidents annually in England, based on FOI data from 15 police forces. With 13% of domestic abuse incidents involving infants, this underscores the urgent need for a nationwide, whole-family response that recognizes babies and children as victims. The Trust calls for systemic, multi-agency strategies, trauma-informed practices, and government investment in early years services to break the cycle of abuse and support vulnerable families. The rise in domestic abuse highlights the critical need for coordinated action. #DomesticAbuse #ChildVictims #TraumaInformed #BreakTheCycle #ECPSafeguarding

Everyone deserves a life free from fear and violence. Unfortunately, in Australia, domestic and family abuse remains a significant issue. We know more than 40 per cent of Australian women killed by partners have visited an emergency room in the preceding two years. St Vincent’s Open Support provides safe-housing and a way forward for women and children escaping such abuse. With Open Support’s assistance, survivors gain a foundation for the future - one where they can live independently. #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen

A huge shout-out to our amazing Head of Housing, Nicki Clarke, who represented Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse at the Westminster Insights Conference on Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) on December 2nd as part of 16 Days of Activism. Nicki delivered an insightful presentation on the critical overlap between anti-social behaviour and domestic abuse, emphasising the need for survivor-focused and systemic responses. Key takeaways: ➡️ 40% of survivors have an ASB complaint logged in social housing. Using a Domestic Abuse Lens can help identify abuse within ASB cases, ensuring survivors get the support they need. ➡️ Highlighting the consequences of failing to identify domestic abuse, Nicki shared a real-life case of a woman tragically murdered by her partner after her ASB complaint was misclassified. ➡️ Children and adolescents living with domestic abuse are often at higher risk of involvement in gang violence, knife crime, and other forms of ASB. Tackling DA is essential to addressing ASB holistically. We can only truly tackle ASB when we address domestic abuse. Thank you, Nicki, for championing this vital message and for your dedication to creating safer, more informed housing responses. #EndDomesticAbuse #ASB #DomesticAbuseLens #SystemicChange #StandingTogether
