Last month, I had the honor of leading an 8-hour biophilic workshop for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Frautschi Center at the Lakeshore Nature Preserve—the future site of Wisconsin’s first Living Building project. The day began with a forest therapy walk on this culturally and spiritually significant land, home to burial mounds of the Ho-Chunk Nation, who have cared for this land along the shores of Lake Mendota for thousands of years. Recently, ancient canoes were discovered here, dating back between 800 and 4,500 years, offering a direct connection to the Ho-Chunk people and their ancestors who once traveled these waters. We had the privilege of walking with a Ho-Chunk elder and leaders from UW-Madison Sustainability and Planning, reflecting together on the enduring presence and guidance of the Ho-Chunk and their ancestors. This experience was followed by a workshop exploring how this Living Building can exist in relationship with the land, fostering a deeper sense of stewardship and care for it. As we design buildings and spaces in harmony with the earth, we have the chance to reflect on Indigenous principles that underscore biophilic design—principles of kinship with the natural world, of care, and responsibility.
