Reactions to this deployment are mixed. Some are relieved to see an armed presence, while others express concerns over the small troop numbers, inadequate weapons, and delays in funding. Despite this, gangs continue to hold power, even expanding their territories. As we take today to look back on these wars, this year is feeling a bit different. We appear to be on another precipice and the attending mustering of our loved men and women for battle, and given the state of the world’s military to kill fast at a distance, the lack of moral authority and the growing divide between sides, this may be truly the worst and last decades of civilization. Wars were fought on battlefields where lines and trenches were established and long battles of mutual attrition determined the outcome. Then came blitzkrieg. The numbers of active duty soldiers, sailors and airmen who died each day has been rapidly outpaced by innocent men, women and children who never raised a weapon, who never got to go to school, whose families were literally torn apart by fire and explosion, with countless suffering horribly in the name of war. They ran, hid, shook with fear, holding crying children, wives with no husbands due to their fighting and dying far from home. What is the toll of dead civilians in wars since the outbreak of World War I and the conflicts that continue to follow this “war to end all wars”? Remarkably, the war in Ukraine has been much less catastrophic for the civilian populations, being outpaced by military casualties by orders of magnitude. But, most of those fighting in uniform for Russia are ill trained cannon fodder. Having a gun is not a guarantee of survival, especially if you are unsure which end the bullets come out of. With these statistics in mind - millions upon millions of human beings - wouldn’t it be “nice” of us to perhaps lay one more wreath for them on Remembrance Day? Wars are started by politicians. Even terrorist organizations at their roots are led by politicians. As we approach the final battle, “the war to end all wars”, let us remember everyone who died never realizing pyrrhic victory.
