There is a growing mental health crisis in America. Nearly 3 in 10 adults report symptoms of anxiety and depression, yet the lack of resources for behavioral health needs is significant. This gap is even pronounced in rural areas where there is only one psychiatrist for every 30,000 people. Helmsley’s #mentalhealth grants are providing innovative ways to address the gap in mental healthcare services across the upper Midwest. From funding a crisis treatment center that offers the greater Sioux Falls region’s first partial hospitalization service for youth to creating Montana’s first psychiatry training program, our Rural Healthcare Program is committed to making sure rural communities have equal access to mental healthcare. “As a former first responder, wanting to be sure that communities can offer support close to home when someone is in crisis is a priority—geography should never dictate your access to care,” said Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer.
