So, for law firms aiming to make the cut, it's not just about legal chops; it's about delivering a superlative experience that leaves them craving your counsel again and again. We're looking forward to Subcommittee member Rachel Hussey's contributions on this. #IBAMexico

At a recent Crafty Counsel networking event attended by Marsden’s Amanda Chard and Tim Andrews, there was an especially interesting Q&A session with an in-house panel - comprising legal counsel from a gaming brand, a global bank and the VC arm of a consumer goods company. They shared some insights and perspectives as end consumers of sophisticated legal products. This included: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀? • They want to see their legal service providers positioned as experts in their field and have regular catch-ups with them. • The firm can legitimately add value by providing a team that knows what the company’s competitors are doing and can introduce them into relevant commercial spaces. • They want to attend training events run by firms that will serve as networking sessions as well as contributing to a baseline level of knowledge. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀? • Don’t expect clients to instruct you on matters straight away. Most short-term needs tend to be driven by commercial advice opposed to huge mandates. • Recognise that building relationships is important and don’t expect to immediately sell big ticket work. • Don’t treat all your clients the same; they are looking for their lawyers to have a deep-rooted understanding of their business and the nuances within it. Above all, the in-house counsel on the panel placed emphasis on having lasting, enduring relationships with their legal partners. #inhousecounsel #lawfirms #relationships #addingvalue #legalrecruitment #marsden

Attention lawyers and law firms: Murray Gottheil, a former Managing Partner at a regional law firm, recently wrote an article entitled: “Battle of the Brands”. This article was, in my opinion, one-sided, and I published my response to Murray’s article. Jennifer Gillman, a legal recruiter, chimed in with her own perspective which cover additional issues, including incentives and compensation. Read Murray’s article first: https://lnkd.in/gSkzywvR Read Neville’s article second: https://lnkd.in/gzEdx4YF Read Jennifer’s article third: https://lnkd.in/guqBFRur Murray, Neville and Jennifer will be presenting and debating the pros and cons of their positions at an online event on December 5, 2024: Branding for Lawyers – Individual or Firm? If you’d like to attend and join in (what will inevitably be a lively and entertaining debate), please register for the event here: https://lnkd.in/gphskGxU. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today. For Ontario lawyers, this event contains 1 hour of Professionalism Content towards your 2024 CPD requirements.

"It's very rare that law firms nowadays don't have any international opportunity" - powerful insight from Mari Cruz Taboada of Lexington Consultants at a recent Platforum9 session on managing cross-border legal teams. As our profession becomes increasingly global, success isn't just about legal expertise - it's about cultural intelligence, relationship building, and effective communication across borders. What stood out? Young lawyers at independent firms often have MORE opportunities for international exposure than those at global firms - but you have to take the initiative. Mari-Cruz shared that success in cross-border work comes down to the basics: replace those endless email chains with brief, focused meetings. Establish clear roles early. Build relationships that last - because in our interconnected legal world, you'll meet the same people again and again. Most encouraging takeaway? Don't wait for partnership to start building your international presence. The opportunities are there now.
